I'd greatly appreciate some recommendations on where to eat, shop and what to see?

What are the best stores for classic menswear in Rome? What are the best sights to see and restaurants to visit?

Thanks in advance!

Battistoni and Lattanzi are musts, but rather overpriced.

Others would say Gaetano Aolisio, Giovanni Celentano and Ripense (tailors), Marini and Bocacce Salvucci (shoemakers), Sabatini (shirtmaker).

What to eat depends on your budget and preferences and well, touristic places in Rome...the whole city is full of historic places, as everybody knows.

I've just come back from Rome - here are a couple of suggestions for eating venues . . .

Osteria 44 - 44 Via Aureliana - Signor Sergio takes good care of all his customers - great space, excellent food and ambience.

Hostaria Romana - Via del Boccaccio (not far from the Palazzo Quirinale) - a restaurant far off the tourist trail, with quintessentially Roman food

Guida Ballerino - the rooftop restaurant at the Bernini Bristol Hotel at the Piazza Barberini - a modern high-style restaurant with excellent views of Rome and good, though not particularly indigenous cuisine.

For a pasticerria, I recommend Panella, in the Via Merulana, about halfway between the churches of Santa Maria Maggiore, and San Giovanni in Laterano - excellent pastries, both sweet and savory.

For gelato, one cannot do better than Come Il Latte, in the Via Silvio Spaventa - excellent and unusual flavors and great texture.

We always try to tailor restaurants around our sightseeing rather than seek out destination spots. There are so many good places that it is hard to go wrong if you put in a little effort, i.e. avoid tourist traps (menu in 4 languages), ask around, do a little research. Almost every neighborhood has good solid spots favored by locals. This Christmas we took a cooking class that was a lot of fun: met our teacher at the Testaccio market, picked out our menu/ingredients and then drove to her nice home on the Palatine Hill for the meal prep.

My comments on Battistoni last December:

Battistoni on Via dei Condotti is well worth a visit if only because
the store itself is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen . The merchandise
is very high end, naturally,

Whenever I'm in Italy, I always ask the owner of a nice menswear shop for a recommendation of where to eat. They seem to pride themselves on referring you to their favorite place and often call ahead for for you.

If you are on vacation, my suggestion is to plan to have lunch around 1pm in a white table cloth place, order a nice bottle of wine and relax for an hour or two over your meal. Take your time, enjoy yourself.....keep fast food and gulped lunches for when you are back home at work.

From a recent trip I can recommend Il Portone, which has some nice RTW shirts and accessories.

Also, if you are near the Vatican, check out Castroni for a fantastic old-style Italian grocery shop - great for food-based souvenirs.
