I picked up a pair of Red Wing Lineman (Japan Exclusive) at Standard and Strange.

I sent them to Bakers Boots to do a pretty intensive rebuild.

- Re-Lasted on Whites Semi Dress last

- removal of celastic toe and craptacular footbed, replaced with leather footbed and leather shank

- DR SOLE and Quabag heel

Anyways, pretty happy with the results. got that nice Japanese style resole.

How are the postman derbys? I'm thinking about picking up a pair, the only thing holding me back is how shiny they look.

I have a pair of Blacksmiths I need to start taking better care of.

Should I buy the Redwing care kit or is there a better solution?

How's it goin, new guy here, first post. Came across this site awhile back while researching on care techniques for leather and such. Great forum!

So, I purchased some 9011's on 3/2014. Nice boots, wear'em all day, every day! They started gettin funky on me though so I took'em in last week to ask the shop what they thought about the couple issues and they replaced'em for me!

Here's some pictures of the two issues I ran into.

I had some separating going on around the sole area, this was my major concern as we're going into the winter months and I didn't want moisture to worsen it. I was told it was only cosmetic and not to be worried about it.

Second issue was this:

The nails were starting to protrude through. This was the shops major concern and what was of most concern.

So, now I've got a brand new, ready to break in, pair of beckmans. Super happy about that!

Now, since I'm starting from the beginning again, I've got some questions, as I've read a few weeks worth on this forum about the various care tecniques.

My first pair, I used kiwi natural on the welt area, thinking it would help with water proofing....now I'm wondering if that could have been the cause of the separating?
I'm also debating on Sno Sealing my boots this time around, but I was always under the impression that stuff seals out moisture, which means you can't reapply any kinds of nutrients/moisturizers to the leather. I remember the days of baseball gloves cracking from this sort of treatment from drying out internally and not being able to get anything to penetrate through the sno seal.

After my first month of owning the first pair, I switched from kiwi to Saphir products, the Renovateur which is mink oil based, and a Medaille D'Or Creme.

I just don't want any issues with this pair, like the last, if anything is preventable on my part!

I figured I'd post this here, since this is a dedicated RW thread. Maybe I'd get some help in one of the shoe care threads as well?

These are a dress work boot, for me. I kick heavy boxes and totes around at work, am on my feet solid 8+ hrs a day doing a lot of walking and standing. I'm not a heavy guy 145lbs.

Definitely have no complaints, these boots are beautiful and awesome customer service from both my local shop and Red Wing!

So, just following up on this, I know a few had given me answers, now I'm looking for opinions. Red Wing sent me a new pair of boots, I was happy, took'em home and wore them inside around the house for about 4 hours and the thick leather insole started to flex upward into my foot, so...off they went and now I've got another new pair...I've got to say, Red Wing and my local store have been awesome about taking care of me, backing their product and customer support 100%.

So I'm now on my third pair of boots in sixish months...but these ones have slight issues. I've worn them every day for the past week and a half. There's an issue with the welt area on the left boot, inside. It hasn't separated, though it looks it, in the pictures. It's like they put the sole on a router of sorts and give the final shape and this one got a little aggressive and gouged it a little bit.

Am I being too picky and worrisome? I don't want a pair of boots that isn't going to last, that's the reason I chose Red Wing, at $330 bucks I thought I was getting something that'd last me years and years. At this point, I almost feel I should've gone with my original, cheap boot and had two pair.

How did you find breaking in the new pair? I remember beckman was way stiff at first. The problems with split soles did surface with a few before. I hope this one will serve you better.
Break-in has been easy on all three pair I've had in the six months. They only feel stiff when crouching, but not too bad. I've gone straight to wearing them all day, from day one, with no painful problems .

my 1907 soles are looking really grimy, does anyone clean the white soles?
and if so, how?

Jason Markk sneaker cleaner. Used them on my 1907 soles too. Came out looking brand new. Just make sure that it doesnt' splash on the leather. It will leave a mark.

Buy them. Not going to get a whole lot cheaper, and the winter isn't going to slow down. Better to be wearing them now than spending time looking and not wearing them just to save $10-20, imho.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
