Re-lining LV briefcase - is it worth it?

Hey guys,

I have a beloved green LV Oural pilot case. I've never seen another like it, and it's the perfect size for my work. However, this vinyl BS they put on the lining has deteriorated and it has lately become impossible to use.

I took it in to the shop here in Toronto that is best-regarded with this sort of thing to get a quote on relining in leather and reconditioning-- and they quoted me $1200!

That's half what it'd cost me to get a new SAB bag which would last a thousand years. Now, I love this briefcase, but I'm kind of put out just on GP that a leather good of this supposed quality would be constructed out of material that is bound to deteriorate in the first place. I have no doubt that this shop would rebuild it to be much hardier than it was when it left the factory, but still.

I'm the only guy in town with this briefcase, and I really love it and would like to keep it--that on its own would be worth a recondition at 5-600. But this? Is it worth it?

it sounds like you really like it, but its up to you whether its worth the money.

Given its sentimental value, I'd probably have it redone

I guess the question is whether the subjective value overwhelms the objective value or whether it's just sending good money after bad. I'm not someone who would have an item of shoddy quality refurbished at great cost due to its sentimental value in most circumstances.

Oh really? then why are you posting the question in the first place.

Don't confuse a "brand name" with matching quality, especially a brand name like LV. Your particular item OBVIOUSLY is not of good quality.
