Predator is awesome just because it features two future governors and the production crew had to hire a body guard for the guy who I'll always think of as Billy Bear from 48 hrs. Mind you, they didn't hire the body guard to protect him, they hired the body guard to protect everybody else from him as apparently he was fuckin' crazy. Oh and there's an awesome story that Ahnold has from his downtime off of the set where he goes out drinking with Andre the Giant and Wilt Chamberlain. You can find it on youtube or grantland somewhere.

Action movies have become much more self-aware of their "over-the-topness" and as a result they're much more tongue in cheek. Movies like Machete and Shoot 'em Up come to mind. Also, what about a movie like The Dark Knight. That's pretty much an action movie and, I would argue, much better than either Predator or First Blood.

Edit: I'd also probably throw in there anything Tarantino's done since 2000.

These are semantic games. The Dark Knight might be "a better movie" than Predator or First Blood (getting into the unarguable so why bother) but it sure is not "a better action movie" by any stretch. It is not a good action movie. Nolan can't shoot action to save his life. He makes (pesudo-) brainy thrillers.

The Raid was cool. (It sure made Dredd look rubbish by obvious comparison.)

ROBOCOP. The uncut version that shows an extended version of Murphy getting shot to hell was disturbing

Demolition Man, Bloodsport, Leon The Professional (Maybe the best one) are also favorites

How does anyone not enjoy Segal flicks? Those movies were gold. Loved Above the Law, Hard to Kill, Marked for Death ( I mean c'mon two crazy Jamaican twins runing around cutting off heads and ****), Out for Justice. These movies border on awesome comedies. Everytime a line comes out of Segals mouth it has potential and not to mention every scene where he breaks someones leg, arm, neck, foot, face, stabs someone in the neck with a pool stick, they are endless

Commando is just awesome for the quotes and the fact that an overweight over the top guy with a ******* chain mail wifebeater on is the bad guy

How does any list of Segal movies omit Under Siege?

Demolition Man is hilarious. I've been meaning to watch that again since the minute I walked out of Gravity, but it's only been a year max since my last viewing.

True Lies, The Matrix, and The Rock are probably the apotheosis of the 90s action film, and like BiggSkip said the genre has largely devolved into self-consciousness, referentiality, and CGI masturbation since then.

I'm also a fan of Universal Soldier #1 and #3 (the two that have both Van Damme and Dolph). The third one, to its credit, was made in 2009 on a fairly low budget, and it's way more entertaining than much bigger movies have been lately.

District 13 is fun, if anybody hasn't seen it yet. (I think inspired the parkour bits at the beginning of Casino Royale.) Avoid the sequel, though.

If Shoot Em Up was the Clive Owen movie I think it is, it was so bad I've repressed all memory of it except recognizing the street signs in an outdoor scene as belonging to the Toronto Business District. And I like Clive Owen / Monica Bellucci. Killer Elite was another humorless, ridiculous gun thriller that failed to justify its own existence, though it had a pretty entertaining performance from the older brother from Prison Break.

We used to quote Chong Li all the time while playing baseball back in the day. "You break my record, now I break you, like I break your friend"

Monica Belluci is usually the best part of any movie. Except maybe that messed up French movie Irreversible which is deeply disturbing on all levels

My college roommate had EVERY single available dvd copy of Segal movies up to Driven to Kill, and we would watch them every Wednesday.

However, even our love for Segal movies could not handle Clementine.. God that was a horrible movie

Really not a fan of Sin City.

Not sure I'd consider Leon an action movie the same way some of these others are action movies, but I watched it a while ago so maybe I'm not remembering it correctly.

Nah Leon probably doesn't qualify as an action-movie in the same sense as the other movies mentioned do, but it's a damn good movie nonetheless
