Yeah I heard it wasn't very good. Bummer

Yeah, there were parts of it that I really enjoyed, and I think it could've been broken up into a few good novellas. The overarching story just didn't hold water, and the thread that was supposed to connect the various pieces together was one of the weakest points in the book.

Neuromancer if you want sci-fi.
Pattern Recognition of you want something more contemporary.

Have heard very good things about "The Three-Body Problem", planning to pick it up once the store downtown gets it in stock.

read a lot of zizek doing high school debate. also baudrillard.

these two are definitely fun to read. they are basically pop culture critics, except they use a lot of weird jargon to make their point so it sounds way more complicated than it actually is. i think welcome to the desert of the real was a fun read, but really they are all a fun read.

i did extemp for awhile. then i was club president/manager and just did the logistics

can't imagine what it would sound like now to hear high schoolers debate policy... i would probably cringe a lot

The only "sci-fi" I've read lately was the pattern recognition trilogy (have not read peripheral yet) and Idoru, but I think we probably talk about gibson too much.

The Peripheral is awesome. I liked it much better than the Pattern Recognition trilogy. Already read it twice.

Highly recommend the Culture series by Iain M. Banks to anyone.

Oh, I liked Excession, so read that. But that's only the second Culture book I've tried, and the first one I've finished.

I'd start the Culture series with Player of Games as it's the best into to the universe (and a good story). Use of Weapons is by far the best book in a series of great books and one of my favorite sci-fi books ever, but I wouldn't have liked it as much had I started with it

What was the first? Excession is awesome but there's a lot of ship-speak that differentiates it from the others... I'm a huge fan of the Culture books. Use of Weapons is probably my favorite. It can read a bit disjointed though.

Ninja edit: I second Player of Games as a great place to start. It's a great story and an easy entry point to the Culture universe.
