I’ve never like Bode, but it does have a distinctive POV. I mean, by the Etsy argument, just seeing if similar items can be found there, any number of brands would not exist. The body of work has to be taken as a whole.

The prices are a separate discussion.
There were plenty that did what she did when she started. We got to see the first or second collection she put out wholesale (remember @conceptual 4est ?) and, while very nice, already looked like what others were doing back then, including Tim at Pentimento, just slightly less whacky and more “tasteful”.

Picking fiftytwo showroom was a smart move because the brand got exposed to lots of contemporary fashion buyers and move away from the craftsy etsy vibe - and most importantly seed the clothes with the fashion intelligentsia. I am not sure how she did it - I’m guessing giving a lot away to the right people, but Bode quickly became a darling of the fashion press even though no one would buy any of it. With the right dose of PR and brand expansion, she managed to raise the profile of the brand and turn it into something that GQ and Vogue readers were forced to acknowledge. PR and placement on artists continued to push that narrative that this is really something. Then fashion awards, etc…

Her strength was never originality nor design genius. It is about picking the right messengers and mastering a very modern form of marketing. And being lucky, I guess.

Emily Bode is basically an average indie musician that got on the right music label and became a radio star. Kudos to her.

I've said before, maybe here, that Bode is just... weak, adonyne, but that is much more of an eviseration.

For Etsy patchwork stuff, I've found this to be decent.+https://www.etsy.com/shop/NezaStudio?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=1033983427

At the time, her take on turning old sheets into shirts and coverlets into quilted jackets was less daring and more subdued (sellable?) than what others were doing in the upcycling world.

Clearly, things have evolved since those first collections

Maybe as someone that has spent too much time thrifting, vintage shopping, and nerding out with people in that world, I find Bode's POV pretty weak at the price point. However I think that is a super cold take and nothing new is being said from my part.

I'm glad Bode is doing well, only if it will shine a light on the super awesome upcyclers and menders out there. Old clothes and materials should always be allowed a new life.

Btw was there any merit about her staff being mostly underpaid/unpaid Parsons students?

Well the middle paragraph is the problem.

It seems like the fashion industry has misunderstood the whole point of the clothes (which are sometimes quite nice).

Rather than people finding and reworking cool ****, you just have Bode being sold in London high fashion or on End or whatever. That's not meant to sound snobby or anything. It's just weird to see a fashion youtuber from Sydney raving about their new Bode piece.

Can one of you fellas kindly remind me how to size Lanvin cap toes? Is it size up or down or are they now TTS? It’s been like a decade since I last purchased a pair

Consumerist question here, but anyone know where to kop "small batch artisanal" leather flip flops? I had some from South Willard and I think later Mohawk carried the same ones, good quality leather with brass tacking and a vibram sole. Basic beach style no jesus straps. Haven't been able to find anything like this for years. Under $200 so please no Hermes slides.

i've had a pair of island slippers for like 6-7 years and think they're awesome and hold up well. not sure if they meet the "small batch" but they're made in hawaii and if they're good enough for Leather Soul to do custom orders with them, they're good enough for me.

Thanks! The one's I had in mind were flatter, but these look like good quality and might be close enough.

You can also try taking a look at Waltzing Matilda sandals. They are made of leather in Maine. 80 bucks.
