Is 44 your usual size? I like this fit and length on you, which is a pleasant surprise because I worried these jackets would run short like the RL stuff a decade ago. I would have gone up to 44 to ensure a slouchy fit but Bloomingdale's was out so I got 42R (if ordering direct from RL I would get 42L, but it was a grand cheaper so I'm hoping it works) and my RLBL stuff is 40L so fingers crossed. The measurements someone here did of his 42R made it seem slimmer than I'd like for a polo coat but maybe they've changed since.

I considered bespoke or even MTM for an overcoat but then it struck me that my tailors already fix the asymmetries with my suits and jackets, so actually a RTW overcoat would do the job perfectly since everything should be evened out.
I usually wear 44 in most brands but in polo RL I can wear a 46 but the sizing is all over the place. for reference I’m 6’2” and 190lbs

Fingers crossed. the 42 fits OK but not as slouchy on me and too short for my long arms - i have a 6'6" wingspan!

Ha you got the last one I think. It had said one left a little while ago, then I went to check when I got the sale email.

How do you find they compare?

I'm pulling the trigger on the RL polo coat, especially now that it's come back to the USA. I just got the 42R in, but I think it's too big on me right now, so put in an exchange for the 40R (and will hold my 42R until I get the other, to confirm). The sleeves on the 42R are nearly 27.5" + 19.5" (I am a 35" inch sleeve). 42R chest came in at about 51" (I have a true 41" chest). I like the slouchy big fit, but this does have just a little bit too much of the "looks like the coat is wearing me" kind of vibe.

I think a 40R should be right for me, over a sport coat or heavy sweater. Some of my favorite overcoats are a RJ balmacaan in a 54 and a DBF Grandad Coat in a 50. If the 40R doesn't fit well over the chest, I'll look into just adjusting the sleeves on the 42R.

Weight on the fabric on this camel hair isn't quite as beefy as some vintage camel hair coats I have, certainly doesn't have that "fluffy" factor that you sometimes see. But it's dense and has a good heft to it. And on me, a 6'0" guy, the length of this falls 3 or 4 inches past my knees, so it's still the full length, vintage fit that RL embraces.

Got the 40R in and it is indeed exactly the right fit for me. About 47" long in the body, maybe a 48" chest as bundled (the rear belt brings the chest in a little bit). Fits really well over a sportcoat, with plenty of room, and fits with the right oversized fit without looking frumpy or "wearing me." And now out of stock, so I'm glad I got it when I did and didn't wait!

Really surprised by these measurements. I ordered the navy polo coat last year and had to size up to a 44 (I'm a 40) to achieve the intended fit. the 40 was like a sausage skin. For reference the actual chest measurement of my 44 is similar to your 40.

Wild. How tall are you? I'm 6'0" with 35" sleeves, and the 42R was so long that it came nearly to the end of my fingers. If the sleeves had been a bit shorter, I would have probably kept it as a good "extra oversized" fit, but frankly the 40R still has a lot of room similar to my vintage fits as it is.

The only thing I can think is either the navy polo coat is sized differently or you're like 6'6", or (and I'm not saying this is actually the case) you're not actually a 40 and everything else you wear is too small?

Ha no I’m definitely a 40 though I do wear 42 occasionally for more oversized fit. I’m 6 foot too and the sleeves are definitely too long but I’ll get them altered.

The navy is made in Italy. I assume they have changed the block recently.
