I contacted C&J this morning and was sent pictures of my hatch grain shell Islays being cut out
Wow - very cool they sent you progress pics of your boots being built. These are going to look so good!! 🤩

I was so tempted by this special order, but with a similar makeup in the same leather (25th Retail Anniversary Coniston), I didn’t think they’d get much wear… regardless, no one does Dark Brown/Cognac shell like C&J.

In case you’re interested in how the finished product may turn out, here is my MTO Islay in Whiskey hatch grain shell (totally inspired by the Dark Brown hatch grain makeup)…

These only took six weeks to build, so hopefully C&J will be able to turn around your order quickly and you’ll have them soon!

I have the Chelsea 11s which I think is the same cleated vibram sole. I would say it definitely has more shock absorbtion than Danite soles, but considerably less than something softer like a gumlite or sneaker. The shock absorbtion feels the same as the traditional cleated vibram soles I've had on hiking boots and Chaco sandals. After a 10,000+ step day on concrete & asphalt my feet are definitely tired but not necessarily sore.

For standing long periods and walking a lot on anything other than concrete/asphalt I prefer the firmness of the vibram cleated sole over a softer one such as a crepe or sneaker sole.
Thanks for your reply. Can't beat a gumlite for walking on concrete. Can you post some pictures of your Chelsea 11s?

My waxed roughout conistons are the hardest boots to break in I own. However, it's mostly in the heel so I'm not sure what's going on. No other 325 boot I own has that problem so I'm assuming it's the waxed roughout. The only other boot I've had issues with breaking in was an Alden shell pair and I had to wear extra padding at the points of issue for a couple weeks until they broke in enough to stop hurting that spot which was the ball of my foot. Now they are comfortable.
It definitely seems to be a "your mileage may vary" thing on this. I'm just not sure if it's the person or the particular shoe.

My roughout Moltons were one of the easiest shoes that I've ever broken in. Both my C&J grains (Boston and Islay) were the two toughest. The Boston gave me a nasty corn on my little toe, and the Islay drew a bit of blood after an ill-advised too soon hike with the dog. They are now my two favorite pairs among everything I own, but it was a process to get there.

Thanks, these look great! How accurate is the colour to the pictures?

I know color can vary depending on one’s screen, but on my iPhone I’d say this is pretty accurate. They take on a little more of a warm brown with some slight reddish undertones in morning sunlight. I do use dark brown cream on them once every few weeks as well but that’s just keeping the color vibrant, I don’t think it’s changed the color at all.

EDIT: Looking at the pics on my PC, the color looks accurate. They just have a bit of a warmer glow in sunlight.

Very nice. Whats special on these is the off-contrast double row stitching all over. . . . What last are these on ?
@BurgundyOxfords and myself were contemplating the Bangor for a GMTO a while back. But there's not enough interest floating around for these (or any shoes for that matter). Boots rule to GMTO roost 🐔

@Humpty_Dumpty_Rises this has been mentioned a couple of times. Any idea why people are so much more interested in boots over shoes? I'd say I wear shoes 95%+ of the year, and generally I also see more shoes in life and photo's than boots.

Looking at Reddit and GMTO's it's all boots. I do recognize the enthusiasm for boots though, and also generally spend more on them.

They are on the 365 last, and really give off a boot vibe when standing, given the roomy toe (it's really the Islay's shoe sibling!). Together with the off contrast stitching you mention this makes it a pair of great casual wingtip for use with jeans or cords.

They're a special made for a now defunct Swedish retailer.

This entirely a combination of my personal opinion plus a WAG. I suspect it's because most of the people who stick to shoes are trying to "color inside the lines" or stay within certain fashion "norms." There also just seems, at least to me, to be less fuss about very specific things on shoes versus boots. (Welt, speedhooks, soles, etc). The boot crowd gets a lot more picky on a larger set of details than the shoe crowd does.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
