cavalry calf is a glossy, coated (calf) leather, simular to the „bookbinder“ of churchˋs.

I wouldnˋt call it garbage, it shows the gloss of cordovan, but not the bulging and creasing. appreciate my pembrokes in burgundy cavalry calf very much.

I’ve had a pair for 5 years. Nothing wrong with them. Same high quality construction. Wipe and go. Feel great, look fantastic.

Annoyed because I went to pick up these colors specifically and just when I finished polishing i realised i used the wrong color... I want to blame this damn darkness, i guess I'll just have to wear them a bit hard so I can use the mahogany soon

Not sure if it's different than Allen Edmonds version but having those in my hand it was just odd looking. They reminded me of patent leather. Also, from a purist standpoint it just seemed wrong to have calf shoes with a coating making it rather impossible and pointless to shine. Some may view that as a positive but I viewed it as a negative.

I've recently received my Ralph Lauren Marlow labelled Pembrokes. Can't really tell if this is also black cavalry or regular calf. Considering the amount of grain you see and it doesn't feel plastic-y, I'd assume it's regular calf.

There are a few other minor differences compared to C&J's like the gemmed welt and double leather soles. Haven't really got the chance to wear them yet as I find black a bit too formal for my day to day wear, but they're great nonetheless.

I wear black wingtips with grey jeans and a black shirt, or black cardigan sweater...if it's BSG - goes even better....

I dislike anything looking unnatural. Even though the best hides would be used, that glossy, artificial look will always repel me.

Gents, looking for sizing advice. I own the following

Two pairs of Grant stone on the Leo last in size 10D
One pair of Alden boots on the Barrie last in size 10D
One pair of Spier and Mackay chukka boot in size 10D

I had a pair of CJ boston in size 9UK which translates to 10D but that was half a size too big being that it's a loafer.

I'm looking at the 325 and 378 last. Would I be a 9UK in these lasts?

To follow up. I'm a 9Uk in sons of henrey. I figure I would also be a 9UK in Crockett and Jones as well. But wanted opinions

Looking good! I’ve got a similar combo I enjoy wearing, some really smart grey selvedge and either my BSG Coniston or my Black Shell Islay.
Well done - of course you must pair with a black watch, I go with either my rare 48mm Zenith Pilot (I call it a poor man's IWC), or my beloved stainless steel Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean - both go so well with my BSG Pembrokes - funny you mention selvedge - I've been looking at getting my first pair - as a watch and shoe collector, I fear this may be be another rabbit hole - LOL

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
