Conistons today, bought last year and still kind of wearing these in. These had an unfortunate quality issue, serious tongue slipping to the side on both boots. You could see that the hide just pushed strongly to the side. Tongues went completely to the side and made the boots uncomfortable to wear and kind of ugly looking as well. Not the first boots with this issue I've had and they were easily fixed by my local cobbler, you can see that the tongue has been fixed to the inside uppers at about the second uppermost speedhook. Nice work, stiching is exactly where the original stiching was so can't really be seen. Now much more comfortable to wear.

I had the same thing on one of my Islays. A good local cobbler has fixed it, but I still think that given the cost of C&J that this is something that should be caught at quality control and not shipped out.

Well, yes, I kind of think the same way. I bought mine discounted and actually had to check the box and invoice that they were not seconds. I've had the same issue with Alden Indy's, but generally C&J quality level is way above Alden.

I've written about this many times before, but my favorite in this type of boots are the AS Cambridges, they have gusseted tongue so they really can't have this issue.

Question for people - it seems to me like the cork C&J uses does not conform to the foot as much as something like Allen Edmonds do. Has anyone else noticed this? I've worn my various C&J boots rather regularly and the cork just doesn't form around the foot.
When I watched a C&J factory film, it was clear they don’t put as much cork in the footbed as Church’s or Edward Green. And the cork doesn’t go back to the heel. That may not be the explanation it I think it’s part of the explanation. I still think they’re good shoes however.

I've only got one pair of Crocketts and I need to rectify this pretty soon. I have Islays that fit my wide feet well but very snugly, in thin socks. I'm looking at getting some conistons but I've read that the 325 last is narrower in the toebox than 365. 365 in 9UK is right on the edge for me in terms off width so I wondered if I should go up half a size in 325?

The best is to try both in a shop. I have both (Islay and Coniston) in 7.5UK and the Islay is wider in the toebox but also overal more space. I can wear my Coniston’s in the summer with thin socks but not they Islay’s, the need thicker socks. Good luck!

Hi guys,

Im thinking of buying some (used) harvards in 8.5D US according to the US based seller (would be a 7.5UK i think).

Im an 8.5E in AE 65, 8.5UK in Trickers 4497 last, 8.5D in Grant Stone Diesel, 9.5US in Nike, 9US in Converse Chuck 70s.

Would these be too small for me?

Thanks!

Islay is definitely roomier all around for me. 0.5 up might work, there is also 317 last, its just 325 in G fitting.

I can only seem to find the Pembroke on the 317. Do they make any boot models on it or would it have to mto?

Don't know if you had seen this:

Here's a montage of both toe boxes (365 + 335) with the Islay to the left. I made this from a picture I found on the web, but can't find the source anymore. That picture had 4 boots shot from straight above and I think this montage gives a good idea:

I don't have a 365 boot, so I won't give advice on the fit between 325 vs 365.

Significant difference there. Think I may need to try some Conistons on. I have a feeling they may just not work for me.

And keep in mind, what you are seeing there is already the 335, which is the 325 with a slightly roomier toe box.
I would definitely try a Coniston before buying and btw, I think going up in size to get the width right is the wrong route. That is what lasts are made for.

Probably MTO, maybe they would do it without MTO charge on a stock model, like EG does for different widths? Can't hurt asking, but its the correct way imo, sizing up also messes with ball placement.
