I really don't understand why people keep saying that about seiko. A grand seiko can cost more than a rolex. Inexpensive, good bang for the buck, etc... Ok, but not a poor mans watch like a Casio or a timex.

A Grand Seiko is not a poor man's watch. But a $50-150 Seiko 5 is a pretty great deal at the price.

I'm the last person to call Seiko a poor man's watch, because basically, they're at the height of MY personal price range. But people around here consider $1k watches poor man.

But in a more accurate sense, that is what it is, a PMMM, known amongst Seiko folk as a Poor Man's Marine Master. One of my favorite (and most expensive) watches.

It's a Seiko SKX007 with some mods:

dial from an SKX171
aftermarket second hand
triple-grip bezel
'superdome' bezel insert/sapphire crystal kit

the bracelet is from an SRP227.

I like that SKX007. I have a SKX031, which is the mid-size version of the SKX007. The nicest thing about the 007 is how many mods you can do to it. The 031 doesn't have as many parts available, which is a shame because bigger divers like the 007 look huge on men with tiny girly wrists like mine.

Seiko 5's are great, rugged watches and very popular on most watch forums. I have one and would like to get a least one more. I'd also like to acquire an Orient diver as well. Below are a few of my recent acquisitions that are suitable for this thread. All retail (in the real world, not msrp) for less than $100.

I also picked up this vintage hamilton for about $100...

Need your opinion on this fellas: I'm looking to get a new watch to take on the road with me. I think my Archimede is getting too much of a beating and the croc strap certainly won't hold up too much longer. I've previously owned a Seiko 5 military automatic and was thinking about another one, or maybe a smaller sized Seiko diver. Just thought I'd poll some opinions on what else might be out there.

In my point of view Black Knight is the best watch for poor man. It's a good looking watch for the poor man and affordable for them.

Also if we're talking really cheap I wonder if anyone has checked out the retro Lip watches. The Churchill, DeGaulle, Himalaya all look nice, and the stock Ronda quartz movements are certainly accurate enough, but I wonder about the build quality of the cases and bands.

Silvermans is Still selling their CWC military watches as well, they're made from stock parts and movements, have fixed spring bars, etc but are well put together. You'd be stuck with NATO bands but you could buy different ones and switch them based on outfit and color preferences.

Not mine but this can be had for significantly less than 200.
Looks a lot like the Seiko Spirits/SARBs to me (not surprising since Orient is owned by Seiko).
