Pick a new phone for me, my Moto Q is dead

My Motorola Q started blinking the Verizon logo and now when I try to reflash it, it won't take the flash. It's pretty beat anyway so I'm assuming it is done for. Luckily I saved my pim.vol when I upgraded it in March so I have most of my contacts kinda-backed up (although it's gonna be a pain to transfer them).

Anyway, I'll need to get a new phone and I don't follow the phone/gadget world at all. I mostly use it for phone and text functions but I'd love to have one I can use for email/forum and tether to my laptop. I like the form factor of this one but I do like the touch screens on a lot of the new ones. The iPhone seems okay but is missing some stuff that I like to have, and seems too locked down for my taste. I'm okay with Palm or Windows Mobile and don't plan to use it too much like a computer, but there's no sense in getting something too limited either.

Anyone have suggestions for me? I am not against switching providers either, no particular loyalty to Verizon and if I get an internet plan I'll probably be paying more than I want to.

Thanks.

Johnny's G1 seems pretty nice.

Kinda chunky, but otherwise, yeah I could probably deal with that. I've also heard the interface is somewhat unpolished, etc.

The good news is that android is open source, so there are probably going to be a lot of tweaks and apps and configurations for it available.

The OS is Android and is same functionality on all the google phones. G1 has a hard keyboard, the magic doesnt and thus is slimmer (both have onscreen keyboards).

Regards.

HTC Magic looks really good but I'm not sure if it's out yet or about to be released.

I'm a Windows Mobile fan. The OS is certainly not as locked down as the iPhone. I'm currently borrowing my sister's iPhone 2G to use in the interim of waiting for the HTC Touch Pro 2 to be released in the next couple months. There are nice things about it but I still retain my loyalty to Windows Mobile (lots of experience with it on a PDA). My one feature I must have on a phone is a hard keyboard. I would highly recommend that for you if you want to texting/posting. Then again, I have large hands so I tend to make a lot of mistakes with the onscreen keyboards.

Palm Pre looks really good and the browser is supposed to be awesome but I'm seeing lots of comments on the gadget blogs about the build quality not being that great. Then again, I'm also seeing some complaints about the iPhone 3GS.

G1 is supposed to be quite good but the battery life is reportedly ****.

I spent $15 to replace the battery with the extended battery on my G1...now it lasts 2 days with moderate use.

Regards.

I guess there's always that option. Does it make the phone thicker though? It's already quite large.

This is something to consider with the iPhone j if you decide to go that route. The battery is not easily replaced/swapped although there are battery packs/cases like the Mobie juice pack that function in this capacity.

Another thing to consider with tethering (although there are ways around it) is that most companies seem to charge some stupid sum of money for it ($30 I think) in addition to your data plan and also the "unlimited" data is capped at 5GB across the board. Gizmodo did a comparison on this recently among the major US carriers.

I will second the HTC, Android is a fairly decent UI and as TS mentioned highly tweekable. Plus IME the HTC hardware hasn't let me down so far.
