the cloth feels different. at first I thought it was just because my current A7 has been beaten to hell and is pretty soft, but the cotton on the new one feels thinner, not as substantial.
I wouldn't say it feels cheap, but it just feels "different".
I'll probably keep it since it was such a good price, but It's a sad day if in fact all of their production is now done outside the UK.

Is it an International Original - http://www.barbourbymail.co.uk/Barbour-International-Jacket.html
Or an A7 Brass - http://www.barbourbymail.co.uk/Mens-Barbour-A7-Brass-Bright-Colours-Waxed-Jacket.html

Because the original is still made in the UK and still feels/looks the same as ever. The A7 Brass isnt made in the UK and is thinner

It's def supposed to be an original.

(A7 brass comes in S,M,L not numbered sizes, has diff lining, doesn't seem to come in black...)

I've emailed barbour to ask them what the deal is.

Very tempted to pick that one up in small.

You should if you can find one. I know that these were selling out like hot potatoes in the UK. It's such a nice jacket - nice and thick too so it'll be perfect for cooler days and nights.

A7 Brass is ****. The jacket is made of polyester and not waxed cotton like the original A7 International.

Just my 0.02 cents on my history with Barbours…

I had Border 38 green for a couple of year, bought it used on ebay, in excellent condition and with a beautiful aged patina.

What I like a lot about the Border is that it doesn’t have the raglan sleeve as the other equestrian cousin.

IMHO the Border sleeves fit better.

Having said that I always hated how long the Border is, it fit to me like a coat more than a jacket (I’m 5.6)

In my pursuit of a new jacket, I wanted a more casual look, shorter.

Lucky was on my side and I was able to get an almost new Trooper in M, color brown for less than $60, a total win. (photos soon)

Even though it fit bigger than my 38 border it allows me to wear some chunky sweaters or layer it better in winter.

I find the trooper to be extremely handsome jacket, much more than the overrated and overpriced international, I would only like it to be able to remove the shoulder tabs for a more clean look, the only other negative I can find are:
  • It would be nice to have another internal pocket, or my beloved napoleon pocket.
  • The external pockets are unlined (cost cutting?)

Then, shortly after my Trooper purchase I was looking for a waxed cotton pea coat like the one from Engineered Garments or Woolrich but they were all out of my budget, that’s when a came across a Blue Reefer jacket in Ebay, I just couldn’t resist and bought it.

Even though is used the jacket is in stunning overall condition.

What I find interesting was the Moleskin collar (not corduroy) and the Amazing!!!! Barbour tartan wool lining, not the old cotton ones or the more “synthetic” feeling of the new clothes.

I try to find more info on the Reefer, but all my googling came out negative.

Regardless of how much a try it on, it won’t fit me; I’m closer to a small in Barbour, even though my trooper is M, this one is just not my side or fit.

So as a general review

The fit is more traditional, my Border 38 fit slim to me, my M trooper has a more relaxed fit but this reefer is big, fit more like a Large even though the label read M.

Very well build, the wool tartan make it warmer than the other two mentioned above.

If anyone have more info is welcome as I plan to sell it as soon as I can, no reason to keep something that doesn’t fit.

Cheers

They make A7 Brass waxed cotton. I have one sitting next to me right now that im about to mail to China. Theres a nylon version as well which you may be thinking of.
Oh, okay. I ordered an A7 Brass jacket for a long time ago, and it was a jacket made of nylon or polyester so I returned it.

Bedale owners: Do you use any of the liners?
I was thinking of picking up the Polarquilt Waistcoat/Zip-In-Liner?
If I wear a size 38 Bedale should I order the Med as suggested or size down to a Sm?

Anyone have any experience with leather Barbours? Specifically Steve McQueens? Regarding fit and quality. Had a proxy pick up a Rosamond (like a leather International from the Steve McQ collection) at the Kittery store marked down to 250.

I received a response from Barbour about why the A7 I just bought has a "Made in Tunisia tag" as opposed to "Made in England":

While most of our core waxed cotton jackets are still made in England, due to the high demand worldwide we have had to outsource some of the production. Some of the Internationals are indeed now made in Tunisia.

Kind regards,

I got this jacket for nearly 60% off so I guess I shouldn't complain, but if I paid retail I'd be PISSED that they're outsourcing an iconic model like the International.

on second thought, I'm not pissed but I am pretty damn sad to hear this.

It is sad, especially if there's a noticeable difference in quality.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this decision. Why dilute a name with such storied history by outsourcing the very coats that they are known for making!?

I give zero f#cks as to if nylon internationals and bedales are made elsewhere, but the their core waxed cotton line??

At least cut customers a break in price if you're going to do this...
$400+ for made in Tunisia?

an addendum-
I asked the rep which of their models are still made in the UK and received this response:

I would need specific item numbers to look up where each product is made. As the range was broadened and diversified, we learned that we cannot manufacture everything. We set out to find, and feel we have located some of the best factories and fabric suppliers in the world. We do manufacture a lot but not all of our core waxed garments in our South Shields factory, but we have had to outsource a large part of our line now. We treat these factories like our own relating to raw materials, technical information, and even cutting patterns. All products are still made to our specifications... and subject to our quality control.

Pathetic for a company as storied as Barbour. Glad I bought mine when I did.
