Need help with buying clothes

Over the last two years, I changed my style a lot and started spending more money in better, longer-lasting clothes and shoes. My approach was to find good brands and buy what I liked and not miss any discount occasions.

I have pretty much a whole different, much more expensive wardrobe now with very high quality clothes, but I still find myself struggling to decide what to wear in certain occasions. I just have a hard time "mentally visualizing"/imagining outfits with the current clothes I have.

So my question is: how do you build your wardrobe? Do you have a certain outfit in mind (lets say, a blue blazer, grey pants, brown loafers) and search those clothes online or do you buy piece by piece and then just manage to create an outfit based on what you have?

Thanks!

I either go for a tonal outfit or complementary colors outfit.
Shoes (and other leathers) are almost always a shade of brown.
Easier said than done. Many times, it is very much up to a particular shade that goes well with another shade but not with other shades of that color.

First of all, i'd change your approach completely. Until you really understand what and why you are buying things then its just a shot in the dark. Once you figure out what you really want, and what you want it things will be easier.

But at the start you are still figuring them out and wont know without some trial and error, so go easy on yourself and accept mistakes as part of the process.

But stack the cards in your favour. Build on the classics.

For me clothing buying should go in the order
Fit
fabric
everything else.

To build a wardrobe you focus on the basics, do them well, and layer. Go as heavy as possible (to increase durability) and layer, layer, layer.

Once you have enough layers that nothing wears out then you can start to deal with specifics. I.e summer suit, winter suit, etc. But keep it heavy and keep it durable.

For colours. Stick to menswear basics.
Navy
White
Grey
Black
Also chuck in stone for a summer neutral.

If you want to add in colour do it minimally and always in autumunals. So, Green or browns. But I'd only do one.

My brain hurts

Consider your life style. Where do you go and what do you currently do? What looks do you aspire towards? Is it doable? Is it reasonable in your current situation? I would keep it minimal. Figure this all out. Don't become a "collector". Instead, plan on wearing what you have and what you purchase. This forum is full of "collections" that are unnecessary.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
