From my experience, both MOP and pearl blend in too much with a formal shirt, especially with silver. If you're going for an understated look, then that's fine. I prefer smoked MOP.

Depends on the day. From a perspective of contrast, then onyx would be the better choice. Some people like this, but there is nothing "wrong" per se, with white MOP. I mean, no one complains that their buttons don't offer enough contrast. I wear MOP an enjoy them.

the studs should match the cufflinks

check on the size of the studs vs the size of the buttonhole on the front of your shirt
I have noticed that some studs, especially the reversible types are often too large for the buttonholes
