I'm looking for tips on mostly forgotten makers of quality suits. Companies that have gone under or turned worse within the last, say 30 years, but used to offer great suits for those in the know. This list will help with vintage hunting as most people don't know of, or care enough, to try out an unknown company.

I'll start with the ones that first come to mind and will update the list if members share more names.
  • Chester Barrie (hand-sewn British suits before they out-sourced to China)
  • Austin Reed (several lineups were made by Chester Barrie)
  • Harrods (at least MTM-pieces were made by Chester Barrie)
  • d'Avenza (hand-sewn Italian suits before switching to machine make)
  • Lutwyche (hand-sewn British suits before they went bust)
  • Montague Burton (very good British suits before switching to bulk make)
  • Ralph Lauren Black Label (very good Italian suits before the label was done in)

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
