The effect tends to be very different when buttoned, so I recommend bearing that in mind if you're hoping to wear it both open and closed. Edit: then I realise the OP's post is seven years old...

Fully collarless jackets strike me as slightly odd, probably because they feature more on women's suits. Mandarin collars can look good, though.

Here's an example from the '50s. Not that uncommon from the '30s through
the '50s. Saw them in films in that era. Always sport coats never suits. No
evidence of Asian influence, eg Nehru, or Mao. For some reason these traditional
Asian styles took the names of politicians.

This (top-right image) is apparently a 'Lite suit' (or possibly 'Life suit'? The text is blurry) from the forties, designed in response to wartime rationing. I've no idea how many were actually made, though.
