Someone was praising MENSA. I thought it might be fun to join.

Then . . . the "what-ifs" attacked!

I reasoned that if I did not qualify for MENSA, I could always join DENSA.

The most boring thing about Mensa is the reaction of people when it is mentioned.

I thought about creating a Mensa clichÃ

generator to include all the old chestnuts, but some members seem to have one already, so there is no point.

I am still enjoying the irony of members of this forum criticising Mensa as an organisation of indulgent, arrogant weirdoes who wallow in self satisfaction due to some, at best obscure connection they have invented to separate themselves from society.


One last plea. Please no more “I could have joined but….” posts. Not only are they page 1, item 1 in the dismissive of Mensa clichÃ

book, but they are doubly pointless when followed up with the “I place no importance on IQ as it is meaningless etc etc …..” comment.

I probably could have joined, but I didn't. I think it would be interesting to go to one of the meetings and see what sort of topics are discussed. To be honest, it would be nice to occasionally go somewhere where you are very unlikely to run into a complete idiot.

I can run into those anywhere, but at least you can learn something from a smart prick. You can't learn anything from an idiotic one.

That's true. There are a lot of learned and interesting people in Mensa. Just let it be known that there are also people who have squeaked in by virtue of their SAT scores and the sort (before they were disallowed as insufficient evidence of intelligence) who enjoy spewing questionable information filtered through addled minds. And that it's very hard to listen to an arrogant asshole without raising a fist or being smart and walking away.

Oops - I just pulled up this thread to say that I just found out that I can join Mensa by virtue of my SAT scores and now I see this comment. They are actually still accepting them if you took the test anytime before 1/31/94 and since I took it in '84, mine still count.

Anyways, I may go ahead and join just so I can throw it on my resume in the off-chance that it will impress anyone in future endeavors

Admission - they had an open testing here in Phoenix on Sunday, but I decided it was more important to spend the time with my wife and kids rather than try and prove how smart I may be!

P.S. TSloop - if you read this - how are you liking the group so far anyways?

I just got a letter to renew my membership and I'm leaning towards not renewing. I pretty much got nothing out of joining except 2 magazines a month. I'm 23 so the idea of sitting around playing scrabble with 50 somethings who I don't know and have nothing in common with doesn't really excite me. Either that or I'm just bitter that I got turned down for the Mensa credit card.

The main reason I'm thinking of staying a member is because I might move to Rockwall, Texas soon where I know exactly 0 people and I figure Mensa might somehow someway let me meet someone that will help with employment.
