Yes, a peacoat that fits over a sport coat is good to have. In that situation, the peacoat would be at least 2" longer than the normal size to account for the jacket worn under it.
I will wear a peacoat over a sport jacket, but never over a suit jacket.
Is this because peacoats are inherently less formal than overcoats or because your sportcoats are cut differently than your suit jackets?

No, my sport coats are cut the same as my suit coats. A sport coat is certainly less formal than wearing a suit, so I can wear a peacoat. With a suit, I would only wear an overcoat.

This looks nice.

Wow, that looks tempting, I love rust colored clothing. But do I need to add another peacoat or peacoat-equivalent to my wardrobe? Hmmm. WW2 pea coat, Frank Leder great coat, 2009 Wolf vs. Goat burgundy pea coat, Antartex shearling DB. Hmmmm....

With your 36" chest, a size 36 peacoat should give you room a layer a sweater underneath.
Hey, I have received a peacoat in the 36" size. I honestly thought that it would be a bit tight in the chest but even with a sweater underneath I don't feel any tightness. The seller did say that pit to pit measurement is 19" but I have measured it again and it is 19.5". It looks okay from the front but a bit big in the back. Should I size down to a 34 size, lol? Or maybe try to find the 36 size but with smaller measurements?

I doubt you will find a size 36 with a smaller p2p than 19.5". Standard p2p on a size 36 is right at 20". The p2p of 19.5" on your size 36 is within the parameters.

I think I told you that with your chest size of 36", a size 36 would give you enough room for a sweater. If you go down to a size 34 it should be a good fit without a sweater underneath. This assumes, of course, that your actual chest measurement is 36". The standard p2p on a size 34 is 19".

The actual chest measurement is a critical measurement. The tape should be put around your bare chest, or wearing a T-shirt. Pull the tape tight, let it relax and take the measurement. Don't assume that because you wear a size 36 sport coat that your chest measures 36". That isn't the proper way to fit a peacoat. Do the actual measurement.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
