Macy's

So in the latest issue of GQ, there was a 4 page glossy advertisement for Macy's. On each page a different designer was featured... Hugo Boss, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, and someone else...

Now, in every Macy's I have ever been to on the west coast (Three in San Diego, three in Los Angeles, one in Santa Barbara and one in San Francisco), only the San Francisco one (which can hardly be considered "representative" due to its size) carried any of these brands. Am I missing something? Is there a hidden room in the Macy's men department that carries more upscale clothing?

I assume Macy's is trying to get a quasi-free ride in boosting its image by association with these brands, even without having to actually sell them in all their locations. I think Macy's probably carries these brands only at their flagship stores; also, perhaps they are limited by other exclusive territories granted to other retailers in some markets. Finally, they may have a personal-shopper program at stores that don't stock these brands; this would enable them to bring in the brands for specific customer orders. For example, my wife wears Max Mara; Saks near us doesn't stock this brand, but they will bring it in for trunk shows and will also special order it upon customer request.

the macy's men's store at thr beverly center in los angeles carries all those brands, and more. i suspect they are reserved for a few choice locations.

Back when I lived in LA (sob,) I used to love sale time at the Beverly Hills Macy. Since most American customers will turn to the black or blue shirt/khaki pants/leather blazer combination (why, why, why?) regardless of whether they are buying at the lowest or highest price bracket, there was always plenty of great stuff to be sifted through come markdown time.

BTW, and not to hijack this thread, but I also learned at the Beverly Center Macy's that homosexual men are just as stylistically impaired as heterosexual men, except that they are more likely to go for a poor imitation of the Eurotrash look (guys, fitted shirts, not lycra bodysuit tight. And what is with the sparkly synthetics?) rather than a poor imitation of "My office is business casual. Or maybe I'm going on a date. You guess which" look.

That is the funniest thing I've read today, because it's so true.

The blue shirt/khakis/leather blazer combo is bland, familar, unchallenging, versatile, everywhere. Fashion fast-food, if you will.

The Macy's locations here in Phoenix and Scottsdale carry all of those brands.

I recall that there was a Macy's spread that was advertising Versace. Presumably the New York, and San Francsico branches carries those brands.

Also in the Valley Fair mall(San Jose, CA) there is a Macy's that used to have a Louis Vuitton booth. Now it's gone because a Vuitton store just opened at the mall itself along with Tiffany's, a propsed Fendi(never materialized), Pal Zileri, MaxMara, and etc.

Right across is Santana Row of which Gucci, St.John By Marie Gray, JP Tods, and etc. are situated. All these stores opened at the times of 2000-2001 right at the time of the dot come boom. Of all these stores the Vuitton is the most heavily populated by customers. Mostly they are Asian, and wanting to but the Murakami or the new Multi-Colour bags. Apparently there is a waiting list.

The Macy*s in NYC carries I believe Armani Jeans, Hugo Boss, Moschino, D&G. I have never seen Dolce and Gabbana or Armani carried at Herald Square, and the 2nd floor attempts to (and very poorly) carry mens designer collection. I believe they are trying to capture that next level of branding, but no one here in NYC goes to Macys for those brands.
