No offense to all the experts here, but aren't we overthinking the linen fabric? Historically linen has been used to make washable shirts for longer and in more countries than cotton.
It's pretty strong, so should handle a machine just fine.
If you want to get rid of wrinkles, iron with steam.
If you want a crisper fabric, add starch
Unless you are in a rush, avoid the dryer and air dry
This is my thought too. Although I appreciate and respect the expert's knowledge shown here, which also makes perfectly sense, I'll keep mashine washing my linen shirts, as people did for centuries. Stains will be treated previously in the proper way. No dryer. Steam ironing.
