To be honest with suede the quality difference is much less apparent than with leather IME. Crappy leather and good one are worlds apart, but not so much with suede.

I’ve read too much negativity towards 5* (in Fedora Lounge) to consider them, that’s why I suggested Rugged West instead.
Rugged West has roughout instead of suede. Quite heavy and has substance. A little fuzzy at first.
I think the leather from RW is much better than that from 5*
However, a few years ago I had my daughter's cheap fashion faux leather jacket copied from 5*, which was then made from black suede and goat. Although the jacket is worn excessively, it still looks like new. So at least the suede of 5* doesn't seem to be the worst. But too thin for my taste.

Apologies if this is the wrong thread. For those who have owned a Margiela 5zip, how is the sizing? I’m a S-M and was thinking a 48 might work. Was looking more for a boxy fit that I could potentially layer under. The sleeve length is usually my concern given my t-Rex arms. If anyone’s got one for sale, that would also be awesome.

I’ve been on this forum for over a decade and have wanted that piece since day one. My style has changed so much through the years, but it’s still one jacket that I feel like could work with most of my fits. It’s either a 5zip or a highwayman/collared moto jacket for me.

Since I’m on the hunt for a jacket, I was going to stop by The Shop in Vancouver. Lucky to have a local stockist that carries Y’2 and Iron Heart. Also considering Aero, Lewis Leathers and some of the other recs around here Will try to take some pics when I’m there.

Iron heart makes a great moto that could check those boxes

The bottom Iron Heart one is my runner up if I can’t find a 5zip in my size. Such a nice piece. The other one is the LEJ leather jacket but it seems like it’s out of stock in my size.

The only challenge for me with the traditional leather jackets is the cut. I really love that boxy, looser fit that MM has.

Our Legacy has (had?) a very simple collared jacket that’s boxy.

Nudie also has the Eddy which is similar.

Then Aero has the Highwayman and the Premier Highwayman, the first is loose (very much so, most size down) and the latter is very slim.

That being said, if it’s a MMM 5zip what you want, just get that.

I don't get the negativity. My experience was excellent. I did stick with goat which seems to be their best material. I'll keep using them.

+1 to what @MickeyPunch punch said, if 5zip is what you are after then drop the cash and do that.

Regarding IH, the cuts for IH on their site are boxier than the collaboration IH has with self edge for example and even then IH is not Rick Owens slim so you'll be fine.

IMO IH makes a fantastic Moto where you don't have to commit to a MTM order like aero (search TFL and sf many many mistakes are made)

Self edge slimmer versions

    • Fun fact, model in this picture is the owner of bar called "trick dog" in sf
  2. https://www.selfedge.com/iron-heart?product_id=2592

What your budget here?

Mr Proper has by far the most experience with 5 star, helll, he is even on their page in the pics.
He said the goat was by far the best leather they do, and the rest is dodgy. I ordered a trucker in goat and it's fantastic.
I'm afraid to deviate from that.

About max $3k CAD or roughly $2000 USD.

I do love the 5zip, but not so much that I wouldn’t consider a great option otherwise. While the 5zip is a personal favourite design and versatile, I feel like a classic collared motos would be timeless and work with pretty much everything in my wardrobe.

Yup. I'm going to order my second from them soon. It'll be goat again.

I wonder if they'll be amenable to a CMT order. We source the leather and have it sent to them.

I've always found they've been pretty receptive CS wise...

But you run the risk of sending them Horween CXL, and getting back donkey.

Ok so one thing I learned is don’t substitute what you want with something good enough or similar. Do this and you’ll end up with two jackets.

Just get the 5zip and call it a day.

LMAO
It’s funny how I’ve been into fashion for this long and have made that mistake enough times, yet I still get in this kind of debacle.

I mean it’s not the worst thing in the world to have two nice leather jackets right?

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
