Vaguely related question but IIRC Self Edge was going to cover duties for shipping the repaired jacket back to the states—is that really something that duties get charged on? Shipping a repaired article back, when duties were presumably already paid on its first entry into the US? That's bats.

The jacket's value at wholesale cost is over the minimum limit so duties/customs on the jacket would be between 20% and 27% of wholesale value once it comes back to the US as Japanese brands do not undervalue product being sent out and only ship via FedEx/UPS/DHL.
Trying to say it was "repaired" has never worked in the 20 years I've been in retail, not a single time..

Shipping ($100 to $150) and taxes/duties ($200 to $250) on the jacket coming back to the US will be around $350 in total.

Damn, I was really enjoying this thread until the end.

It's nice that SE offered store credit in the end, but only *after* these 10 pages, most of which written in response to them having refused to do so in the first place. If they had done so to begin with, this thread would be 10 pages shorter.

My experience with Self Edge as a nobody with zero connections through all private communications: I made a complaint to Kiya about an admittedly pretty small cosmetic defect. He sent a prepaid shipping label to return, but there was a shipping snafu and I realized I was being melodramatic anyway and decided to keep it. Kiya issued me some store credit for no real reason other than being awesome. So yeah, Self Edge is #1 in my book. @dieworkwear is also tops in value added to this thread so can we please not chase him off with our pitchforks.

Really nice. Where's it from?

Also, as someone who grew up in Texas, I imagine this coat is for all the future travel to places less rainforest-y than Houston.
I remember a spittin' sleet Mardi Gras that was so cold the suede gators froze up harder than a fudgesicle in box of a dry ice

Let’s not forget that one of the apologists got an entire free leather jacket from the company he is now defending

Was there a formalised quid pro quo in place?
Probably not, but you can see how the back scratching works

To look at a kind offer from someone and then make a dismissive comment about them doing it to save their friend's reputation, what a horrible way to view the world.

"I'll help pay for it."
"Well of course you would, you guys are friends, he probably gives you free stuff, what are your disclosures..."

First, and I hope the last, time I'm choosing to block any future posts from someone on this forum. Some people are so so ******.

Wow please don’t !

I never even mentioned dieworkwear once
He chose to believe it was directed at him
Strange ?
In fact he had also blocked me, which means he chose to reveal the post and then chose to make it about himself

Dude. Stop.

I've defended Red Wing, Wesco, and countless others on this thread and never got a dime or product from them. Take your cynical garbage elsewhere.

I'm thinking if you're declaring the actual value of the package for insurance purposes, I do believe courier services will assess those fees.

That's insane, and only adds fuel to my concern about both of us losing on this. I don't need to take you up on your store credit, though I sincerely appreciate it. The fact alone that you're going to be out upwards of $300 is seriously wrong.

Just curious, @kiya: Can you share anything FCL has said on the matter?

Are you ******* serious?

Honestly, both of you can go **** yourselves.

OK, but why exactly ?

Unlike skeen, I *never* said you or @UrbanComposition took free goods or payments from Self Edge. To be clear, I don't believe that to be the case at all and would never accuse either of you of anything like that.

Maybe i don't know about you @dieworkwear, but @UrbanComposition has made it 1,000% clear that he is buddies with Kiya, and that's why he is offering to make this right.

That's cool, and I respect that. Nothing wrong with that per se.
But perhaps consider that having a personal friendship with someone can bias your judgement on what customers can expect from that friend.

Maybe it is just a coincidence that the biggest defenders of Self Edge in this case are the ppl who are closest to Kiya. Whereas the ones who are comfortable saying SE could have done a bit better tend to be ppl who have never met Kiya before.

All I'm saying is that I would defend my closest friends too, and I'd prioritize them over strangers. That's great, and even admirable. But personal (*not* necessarily commercial) relationships can make someone less than totally objective.

It can make some of us feel like we are up against a StyleForum clique when someone makes a measured, valid criticism of a favored brand.

Also, have we forgotten that this forum was literally built on a pile of bad Foo customer service stories? The green Hermes breast wallet, the frayed Matuozzo shirt, the Jay Kos trunk show, the failed Cleverley, the missing 12 pairs of pants from Ambrosi, the failed DB suit and greatcoat from Rubi, etc?

Perhaps you're right, I don't 100% know what you would have done for businesses who are not friends. You probably offered to compensate Foo for the Hermes wallet, the Matuozzo shirt, the Jay Kos, the Cleverley shoes, the Ambrosi pants, the Rubinacci tailoring. I wasn't there for any of that, so I'm sorry I didn't know you offered to pay for all (or any) those items !
