+1 I have a medium with 38 chest. I can't imagine fitting a 40.5" chest in here unless you wanted it skin tight.

I don't mind it being a bit snug, just as long as there is no pulling of fabric. At the same time, I don't want it to be "loose"...

Haha ok guys. I have a 42 chest, am 6'0, and a large is what I wear, but it's bigger than my other polo shirts (which I typically wear M in). I supposed it's just personal preference.

I don't have the brogues, but I'm 9.5D for handgrade loafers and 9D Barrie.

I don't have Barrie, but did size up 1/2 size for the brogues from my normal size. I think it is worth the return shipping cost to get both sizes and be 100% sure you got the right size.

How tight is the large around the chest?

hi—sorry i didn't respond. here are a couple pics of me wearing the size large polo in june at a benefit concert i played at. might give you an idea—again, i have a 42-inch circumference chest size.
