I don't think it's boxy cuts that's killing JE right now cuz boxy cuts are pretty trendy despite what a lot of people on styleforum adhere to (I been seeing size down one on here for the past decade), I just think John isn't really a strong designer (yet?) and he's been pushing in that direction of being a designer much more than just being that premium basics guy.

Like for example that bougainvillea print, the art deco print and the nogales print have all been big misses to me. Poppy print was decent. I know it doesn't have much to do with design but they certainly aren't basic lol.

Or like how that reversible fleece jacket didn't make sense functionally when reversed fleece side out shows that there are gaps in his design process and he's still just trying things out

He's hit with some newer drops IMO (Washed graphites, Raws, Jacquard shorts). I just circle back to older stuff, OG JE Vandals and long sleeve/short sleeve supima blends. Simple and timeless

There is only so much you can do (or sell) with basics. I think the different styles of t’s are confusing but if they only had classic, anti expo, oversize, I don’t know that they’d sell more than they do now. Having said that, the women’s stuff looks like clothes from Zara’s two years ago and I definitely think they are overextending the brand in a way to open it up for other brands.

$7 returns spread out across thousands of orders is a lot of money for a small business...not sure why so many of ya'll shocked that they would do cut making it free. Even Amazon doesn't allow it unless you drop it off at a store partner. Seems like a logical step to make after one look at the books from last year and seeing how much they probably ate on giving out free returns. With that being said, I only buy from JE direct when I can't get it from a retailer with faster shipping speeds.

The cost of free return shipping should have been forecasted prior to its offering, IMO. but even so, lets say they underestimated the volume and cost, returning back to its original state of "pay for your own shipping" gives us more options than to be forced into taking a cut. The only way to get 100% back is going the store credit route. Personally, I have no issue paying via PayPal and getting reimbursed by them. I'm sure others may have jobs that allow them to print shipping labels. This method just seems like a further step back than its previous state due to its limiting options.

PayPal will still reimburse you if they company takes $ for return shipping (up to $30). So as long as you use PayPal it doesn’t really matter. It’s just one added annoyance.

I learned early on I’m really only a basics-buyer. Having 2 pairs of Carbons, 1 Obsidian, and 1 Raw Indigo, and an assortment of tees and sweats/sweatshirts is perfect for me, so JE will never get old in my eyes. I do like seasonal pieces at times, but I know myself, and know I’ll probably not wear much if at all, so even on sale it’s not really worth it for me.

Same here. Basics with the odd interesting addition.

ah, good to know! thanks!

Has anyone returned anything since the policy change? It’s interesting to note that it’s a $7 handling fee, not a $7 return shipping fee. Is the return shipping still covered or is it you pay for return shipping AND there’s a $7 restocking fee?

Nice. The obsidian looks good when fresh. Here's my pair - as i've mentioned before JE's raws wear very quickly compared to actual raw denim (which can take 4-6 months of daily, hard wears to develop fades). i don't think i've worn mine more than 30-40 times and they're almost done at this point - i think they still have a lot of character but they're definitely no longer black. in addition - i'm developing some blowouts which will need a patching.

not sure i will reup when these die - might just stick with the carbons and hope they last a bit longer.
