Some of you mentioned recently the name of Tautz...
I have been talking to Patrick Grant about this subject and I can give you more info if you want to...
Tautz was part of Norton & sons tailoring house and was made famous around the globe by the famous Tautz lapel ...
Norton and Sons is currently relaunching the Tautz look .
One shop in Tokyo (Beams) is currently selling the suit seen in fashion magazine and a group of shops called Beaches (in Notting Hill)is also selling the Tautz lapel suit...
They're actually negotiating with some big department store in the USA to bring Tautz to New-York next year..

There's a reason why the Tautz lapel never really took off. You can see that a normal notch lapel is a vestige from when jackets buttoned all the way up. But what is the tautz lapel for? Innovation in clothing isn't good in itself, otherwise why not wear three-sleeved coats?

Clearly you didn't see Jeremy Scott's Winter 1997-1998 collection...

I am slightly confused. Will of A Suitable Wardrobe says the Tautz lapel is this style, a favorite of the picture subject Gay Talese:

While the discussion with the current Tautz designer here has nothing like it. The only unusual thing is a slightly wider collar on a peaked lapel coat:

This is also seen in one historical Tautz pic:

As seen on this other blog. Some say the Tautz lapel notch is horizontal, as it is on the contemporary shot, but on the historical shot it is not. So what is the definition of this characteristic lapel?

The real Tautz lapel/collar taken in end of February 2009 at Norton & Sons at the direction of the impeccably dressed owner Patrick Grant

Your pix seem to be the same coat, shirt, bow tie and pocket square on the model above.

But what is the definition in words of what makes this lapel distinctive?

if the pictures are authentic, then the tautz is just a horizontal peak wide or narrow.
take a look at the pictures of the 30s styles, you see it all over the place.

The picture of Gay Taleese above has "Goat's Ears" lapels...which Italian and Greek tailors are familiar with. Note Gay Taleese's father was a tailor (per Wiki) The horizontal gorge is all I can discren to differentiate the Tautz lapel from other Peak lapels. The historical picture on the Norton site is not the same as the Tautz lapel on display (and posted pic above) at Nortons Savile Row shop. aTailor is correct...if one visits the Fedora Lounge and searches, or checks out old vintage 1930s Apparel Arts pics...the Tautz lapel was copied by many others Below are my own Goats Ears lapels (sorry but the iPhone is so easy to use and upload yet the quality is low)

I actually thought that the Tautz lapel was the one Will talks about (goat's ears? I'll ask my tailor about that!). I rather like the Tautz peak lapel, actually. Perhaps it screams retro, but it does look good.

When I met patrick Grant , we talked about the Tautz lapel and it current revival on the Sartorial scene...
The model on the picture is the one for sale (grey chalk stripes)...

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
