Vintage overcoat or peacoat.

If not vintage then the peacoat.

I can't imagine a grad student is going to have a great need for an overcoat so either go with something interesting like a vintage piece or don't.

Get a shorter overcoat, something that doesn't go below the knee or a peacoat.

It also sounds like you should get a none-of-the-above, inexpensive jacket for rather casual circumstances.

Yeah, peacoats remind me of college bros trying to dress up.

Living in the south I would get a peacoat, but if I was still in New England I would get an overcaot. Just depends on your location. A light overcaot would fit the bill for you in your climate.

It's not beyond the ability of a modest budget to get both a peacoat and an overcoat, if you're willing to consider vintage. Thrift stores often have an abundance of overcoats, many in excellent condition. Be sure to check the women's section; I've often found men's overcoats misplaced among the women's coats.

As for peacoats, most cities have a decent military surplus store, and you should be able to pick up the genuine article there for a very reasonable price.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
