Here's a picture of the blazer:

Here's a picture of the sleeve tag which makes me wonder, though the label inside the jacket seems authentic:

The seller says it's new but I'm wondering if it's new new, or new old stock.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

I'm pretty sure its new old stock.
Someone else with more experience should pipe in though.

You're right, though I have seen blazers with dark shell or tan horn buttons before. Perhaps this piece would be better called a sportcoat? Here's a link to the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:IT&ih=009

New old stock, mid- to late 90s maybe? That's the newer tag inside the jacket on the breast pocket. The tag with the blue numbers looks like the upper part of an old outlet tag, but the 100% wool indicates it's not the old 346.

I think this is from the first half of the Marks and Spencer era. I have a similar jacket that I got from the seller zeydes who gets them from the outlet in NC. How something wind up in an outlet 10-15 years after being on the racks of a retail store is interesting.

You can make it more like a blazer by putting some nice antiqued brass or lighter color horn buttons on it. I replace the tacky gold tone buttons on my blazers with horn or corozo.

Could you--or anybody--please educate me as to how to tell the difference between an orphaned navy jacket and a navy blazer/sportcoat that has dark buttons?

I've seen pieces that look just like suit jackets, replete with dark buttons, ticket pocket, etc., but the tag is marked "navy blazer". I don't know what details I'm overlooking.

Thanks.
