I've never tipped a dorman. Ever.

It would be more reasonable for the association to offer a Christmas bonus to each employee at the end of the year.

In montreal when I lived in a building with a doorman, I tipped the ones I saw regularly directly. I'm small-time though, so I only gave $50 and it didn't even occur to me to tip the super. I certainly wouldn't dream of tipping him $200. That's insane, but then, NY is a special place I guess. And we didn't have porters. The idea of tipping a porter at xmas is a little weird to me though since they'd generally get tipped when they bring stuff up for you, no? Whereas the doormen do things on an occasional basis that I wouldn't normally tip for (such as signing for packages), but is appreciated nonetheless. I don't think you should have to tip people that don't do anything for you, but again, I don't live in NY and I don't make 500k/yr.

My post made me think of a more pertinent question. How much is everyone tipping their majordomo?

write a check in the recommended amount for the general fund, that way guys who work hard but you never see (and who never see anyone) are taken care of. examine your budget, your satisfaction w/ the staff and your plans to remain in bldg. people you tip regularly during the year give a nominal amount ($10, $20, $30, $40?); guys you don't tip during the year, but who help you give a nice tip ($50, $75, $100?). keep the super happy ($50, $75, $100?). i hand out the envelopes in person (just keep them in your bag and pull them out as you see people over the 2 wek period leading up to the 25th. don't give a guy an envelope if there happens to be another guy there who isn't getting one. a firm handshake and genuinely thank them for all their help throughout the year and wish them & their family a merry christmas. if you can't track someone down, are pressed for time, going away, etc., you can leave the envelopes w/ a head guy to be distributed, but try to do it yourself. don't forget the garage guys if you park in the bldg.

Seems like an awfully unpleasant chore; one of the prices you pay to live reasonably in NYC. Of course, there are upsides, too... Ultimately I don't think I could live there long-term. It is great to have the keys to my aunt's place, though - the doormen know me by name now.

It is a chore, but not especially unpleasant. I genuinely like a bunch of the guys and they are a tremendous help to us throughout the year. In the end it feels like the 'right' thing to do, and the guys are very appreciative.

TheApple was a troll who would start threads very similar to this one - but I think his always had more of a satirical edge to them. This one seems on the up-and-up to me. Roma, I would think it unpleasant, but I think it depends on who you are and where you are. I've heard some very unpleasant stories from friends about rivalries and preferences and such arising as a result of not tipping enough, or tipping one guy too much, etc. etc. I generally hate these sorts of transactions anyways, and I'm a bit of a paranoid so I'd constantly worry if I'd done the wrong thing. Obviously, your mileage varies, and that's awesome.

+1

I definitely miss some of the conveniences of having a doorman. The biggest thing for me was having someone to sign for packages. Back when I was ordering all my kitchen stuff, if it weren't for them being there to sign for stuff and put it in the back room, I'd have had to lug huge boxes back from the post office. Plus, they were generally nice guys, and like you said, it felt like the right thing to do.

I do not tip my Majordomo as he is a Sherpa who swore allegiance to me when I pulled his family out of their home after an ill timed avalanche. To offer him a tip would be most insulting.
