My wife bought this for me and after lighting it a couple of times I have to say it smells less like tabacco and more like butterscotch. For some reason, the tabacco scent seems to be difficult to package for perfurmers, be that in candles or colognes.

baxter of california recently introduced 3 candles geared towards men with apparently masculine scents (www.baxterofcalifornia.com)

i still think a lampe berger is the best bet to purify smells from a room
you can use their 'neutral' oil for an unscented purification

I know people here aren't big fans of Banana Republic, but they also have candles. I bought a lot of their "Fireside Lounge" candles last Christmas, b/c I thought it was just a seasonal thing that wouldn't last, but I'm pretty sure they sell them year-round. It's an incredibly masculine smell. I love it.

Apartment Therapy had a bit on mixing water with baking soda, and leaving it an open slow cooker on low.

I saw something in a cooking magazine once about stuff you could boil right before guests arrived to put some nice aromas in place.

I think it mostly focused on things that would be left from whatever recipe you just followed like simmering cinnimon or the peel from the orange you had to juice for some sauce...

diptyque makes great room sprays that dont smell like deoderizer. cypres smells like pine -- sort of like a christmas tree is in the house... there are many other options.
