Our friend is fine, thanks. As for his "appliqued" suits, he is a fan of heavy metal bands, hence the sewn on patches, though he apparently has jackets of the same material without the patches. His tailor apparently shares his sense of whimsy (or at least is willing to indulge him, for fun and profit). I can tell you that the patches have garnered him some measure of attention, of a positive nature, in the few days he's been here in NYC.

:-D

I may be wrong, but I associate the image of a heavy metal fan rather with the biker look.

Biker rock is more hard rock than metal. Metal, especially these days, is much more associated with geeks.

Happy New Year. Wishing everyone a blessed 2025. Doing a creative black tie look with a black watch tuxedo shirt, burgundy velvet jacket, and cream pocket square. My tuxedo shirt studs are too small for the button holes on this shirt. They kept falling out. That’s why I’m using the cream buttons that came with the shirt.

Bernoulli isn't just into ordinary metal, he is into hard core death metal. This is the type of stuff Bernoulli is into:

Lots of people are into that type of stuff including Jim Carey.

I effectionately call them the `rough voices'.

Geeks, sophisticated music types, academics, metal heads, outcasts, rich people, poor people; all types are into it.

Pretty sombre, but in a pleasant way.

Happy New Year!

To start the New Year, the last ensemble of last year. My husband and I entertained our out-of-town guests, the redoubtable gentleman known in cyberspace as Bernoulli, his wife, and another close friend of ours, for dinner, Champagne, and chatter until the New Year struck. As we were entertaining at home, and our traveling visitors did not have room in their luggage for black tie, suits made do for the evening. Here is my attire as shown below:

Suit - Paul Stuart
Shirt - Harvie & Hudson, London
Tie - Charvet
Cufflinks - Deakin & Francis, private label for Penhaligon's
Braces - Albert Thurston
Pocket square - Robert Talbott
Shoes - Bergdorf Goodman house brand

A waist covering would take the next level fit to the next next level.

It's been a long and busy day entertaining out-of-town guests - a morning foray to the Cloisters, followed by lunch out, then a rest, then dinner out at a favorite Italian restaurant, for which today's attire was assembled.

Sports jacket - New & Lingwood
Shirt - Tyrwhitt
Tie - Chipp
Cufflinks - Deakin & Francis, via Scully & Scully, NYC
Braces & trousers - Paul Stuart
Pocket square - no name brand
Shoes - Gaziano & Girling, Deco last
Overcoat - Brooks Brothers
Scarf - Paul Stuart
Hat - Seifter Associates

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
