An olive tie would look good, but I think that the pink one is a great choice, providing the right amount of eccentricity.

Quick & dirty, poor lighting. Wearing my holiday pocket square for likely the last day in the office (and certainly the courtroom) this year. The shoulders look weird because I'm holding the phone out for a selfie.

I can't quite articulate why, but the pants read as pajama bottoms in these pictures. I agree with your assessment that the cardigan visually isolates the shirt.

Pajamas often have tartan prints on them. Maybe that's the connection.
