Windsor Tan - Tobacco Cavalry Twill Trousers

What could be a sexier color name than the “Windsor Tan” if interpreted literally? This is my preferred choice of pants this fall. The Cavalry Twill bunch from Brisbane Moss, another solid workhorse, new to our collection, but not to my wardrobe - I have been wearing a different pair od trousers cut from this fabric for the last 2 years.

At the top, one of my navy blue jackets, worn with a Saint Michael the Archangel painting pocket square (which ultimately did not go into production - what a pity!) in the breast pocket. Additionally, striped bestsellers from previous years: a shantung tie and an OCBD shirt made of recycled cotton from Albini. And at the very bottom…

I do not understand your shoe choice here. Even setting aside my general dislike of this style of shoe, it just seems incongruous with the rest of what you're wearing. Which is lovely. :)

No tartan today. Very cold today, so tweed, flannel and fair isle.

The weather in NYC today is partly sunny and cold, with wind chills below freezing. As I've got a members' "do" at the Morgan Library this evening, I decided to suit up, and act like a civilized person for a short while, at least.

Suit - Paul Stuart/Phineas Cole
Shirt - Brooks Brothers
Tie - Paul Stuart
Braces - T M Lewin
Cufflinks - The Persian Shop, NYC
Pocket square - Brooks Brothers
Shoes - Septieme Largeur, Paris
Overcoat - Brooks Brothers
Scarf - Johnstons of Elgin
Hat - Laird Hatters, London

I have a question for you -- hopefully you can educate me.

Your hat -- you have it set jauntily upon your head. Can you move around normally with it on your head like that? Or it is just to pose for the photos -- the minute you move, it tips and maybe even falls off?
Or is this the way it fits, and you can even hang upside down on monkey bars from you knees, and it still stays on your head?

Also, what material is that? Is it a type of felt?

Also, your socks quality must be really good, I've had that problem also with the pants clinging onto your shins like that looking like jodhpurs only with pure silk knee-length socks! I find electrocuting yourself mildly on the car door handle on the way out solves the problem for the rest of the day.

In answer to your questions . . .

My hat fits my head well enough that it doesn't move, though not so tightly that were I so agile as to hang upside down from the monkey bars that it would remain on my head (I have a tight-fitting French beret for such occasions - not that I frequent the monkey bars, but I do experience strong winds on occasion, which would do the same thing - blow today's hat off).

The hat is some form of fur felt - which I do not know.

Depending on how tapered the cut of my trousers is, I can find that the trouser material clings to over-the-calf socks, regardless of the material from which the socks are made. I generally do not experience the problem of trousers clinging to socks due to static electricity, but only of friction.

Black shoes (and socks) don’t play well with beige strides.
And all your pics are let down by those ankle-strangling strides. Massive wardrobe overhauls don’t obviously happen overnight but you’ve been around here a while now and I see no improvement on this … and for the record I lean towards slim cut strides myself but not this slim. If this is a stylistic choice that you’re sticking with then that is of course your prerogative but IMO it lets you down.
As a rough rule of thumb the front crease of your strides should optimally rest a third to half the distance down your shoe. Yours routinely don’t even appear to reach your shoe at all!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
