People have different preferences, of course. I think one of the best things about this forum is when we acknowledge a person's preference and discuss the best way to execute it. So the focus is on execution. Given a certain set of preferences, Texas is probably the best place in the world (especially if you want to live in the United States and not deal with a super **** economy). Given a certain set of preferences, I'd say the Bay Area also can't be beat. Same goes for the Pacific Northwest. But if you want to live in New York, you'd probably be happier in London. If you want to live in Florida, go move to the Mediterranean or some Caribbean island. If you want to live in Baltimore, I don't know, maybe try a landfill? :nest:

My city preferences, if I could live anywhere (only going to places I've been to)

London
San Antonio (I really love Mexican-American culture, and everywhere else in the US is way too white)
Hong Kong
Berlin
San Francisco
Munich
D.C.
Busan

Interesting choices. Among others lived and worked in (near/)London, Berlin, Munich, Singapore, Hamburg, Jakarta. Been to quite a few places in Europe like all over Spain, Italy, in Asia, Oz, NZ. But not to Americas (big omission) or Africa (except Egypt).

Best places/cities to live for me (and where I've been) Madrid (over Barcelona), Rome or Florence (who wouldn't), Tokyo, HK (both, if not forever), Hamburg (over MUC and Berlin) Sydney (didn't make it to Melbourne). Retire? Italy or Spain.

PS: Avoid Jakarta unless you're single and so inclined. Jakarta100bars.com

:paranoia: I mean honestly the bolded part doesn't even make sense. and I'm curious where you would live in HK that is so great? Mid-levels? Repulse Bay? I lived there for almost a year and the mainlanders and locals there are ******* uncivilized heathens and the place is generally a **** hole unless of course you are fabulously wealthy and can insulate yourself from the plebes. London is definitely cool agreed.. even more so if you're a vampire. quite an odd list there Clags. D.C. really?

lol texas being the best place in the world, what an effing homer.

+1.. lol Texas.

The dominant culture of most major US cities is WASP. San Antonio's cultural is distinctly Mexican-American. This appeals to me greatly (note: I'm Hispanic-American)

San Antonio was the first city in the US that I visited. Really different from Europe, but I loved it... I tend to judge cities by the food and I ate the best steak so far in my life in San Antonio. (I have to admit i had prejudices about American food before my visit)

To continue the Texas discussion, San Antonio is the only city in Texas in which I've spent any time, and I did find the fact that there is an actual pedestrian area (the Riverwalk) in a city not on the East Coast of the US unusual and charming. Whether I could live there is another story, as I've not driven a car since 1989, and do not really wish to re-learn how.

As it is, I am much too well adjusted to living on that long narrow chunk of schist stuck near the mouth of the Hudson to live happily most anywhere else, except perhaps London, and for that, I'd need more money.

The start to yet another week, a cool and overcast day in NYC with chance of rain this afternoon.
