Has anyone given up on their plan A in life, and have accepted plan B or C?

Great thread! My plan A was to do something creative. Writing, painting, photography, etc. Plan B seems to have taken over, which ended up being management consulting as a means to support my family. Sure, the money's good, but it tends to be all-consuming, leaving no free time to pursue creative endeavors. I regret not doing those when I had the chance. Now, after ten plus years in consulting, I am wearing the proverbial golden handcuffs...

Plan A was to play basketball for the Chicago Bulls (f you D.Rose!!) which clearly didn't work out. Plan B, was to use my dad's help to get into i-banking or VC, then he passed way. Now my goal is getting a CPA, working for a big 4 public accting firm before going into corporate. Sadly, I am not very excited at this plan right now.

My friend just took over ownership at a really awesome and historic Cleveland bar (that's also really dead at the moment) and our other friends get to hang out/work there all day/be poor/live the Always Sunny in Philadelphia lifestyle--- I am jealous. Owning a bodega or pawn shop is starting to seem like a great option too..

Plan A: For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a history professor. Once I got into college, I spoke to several academics and the picture they painted was bleak. It made me think, "I'd rather be a janitor." Seriously. Further research made me realize that they were pretty much correct. I am on Plan B (politics) and hope to continue along that path. I like politics, I like policy, and my research/writing skills make me think I'll be able to handle a variety of roles in the political/governmental world.

How so? I've always had an interest in history, but never considered it as an area of study since it seemed about as impractical as the area I eventually chose (creative writing).

I pretty much wanted to be a businessman who did international sales for a large corporation, since I was a little kid.

for maybe 5 years, in my late teens and early twenties that changed, and I had a different long term goal. I did that, and did it pretty well, but realized that I didn't want to do it for the rest of my life and eased my way out of it.

so I am basically on Plan A, or maybe plan B, but pretty close to track.

my plan A was to be a professional football player. unfortunately i was born with a rare condition that involved my kneecaps not developing correctly. to be specific, my kneecaps are essentially non-existant.

it doesn't hinder me in daily life besides some soreness -- but combined with the fact that i'm only 5'10 and 137lbs....i wasn't going to make it in the NFL.

plan B is to become a lawyer. i'm still on that track.

plan C would be to be an english professor.

Critical thinking, writing, research skills, general knowledge which comes in handy every single day. I cringe when I read papers from my senior year in high school. Four years later, my writing has evolved a lot and for the better. You learn to write analytically, and to distill vast amounts of information into a cogent, clear and (hopefully) readable synthesis. Pretty valuable skills IMO.

I'm still young, but so far I have regretted, since I was a teenager, not dropping out of high school, getting a GED, going to a community col, then going to a uni. High school is such a waste of time. I added up all my classes I think were useful and it only added up to 1.5 years worth of education.

That said, had I dont that, I never would have met the girlfriend which I will soon make my wife. So, you never know.
