is it just me or does anyone agree with me that you should go look to your family to help you on this issue first before going to ask online strangers to help you with a suit?

it is an emergency. go charge your card. so you are asking us to charge a suit for you because you dont want to deal with that?

condolences to you for the passing of your grandfather.

Hah! I'm not asking for a handout or anyone's credit card number, please don't think that! Just some advice. Thanks for the condolences as well. Hopefully my family can help me out. That, plus thrift, will be my last option. Thanks ya'll!

This is going to sound stupid, but if you go to a costume store for Halloween that would carry the makings of a Blues Brothers costume, you may be able to piece it together cheaply. A buddy of mine was putting together his Halloween costume, and had to get a black jacket, black Raybans, white dress shirt, etc. I know him well enough to know he wouldn't have spent more than $50 on a costume, though I could be wrong. You're not going to have a jacket that will be worth more than one laundering (if that), but it will get you through the day.

If you're mostly inside you'll pass out from wearing a peacoat. Honestly, hit the thrifts. You've got pants. If you don't have a serviceable pair of dress shoes you can find a pair there cheap. They won't be great, but just get something that looks like you can clean it up well. As far as the coat, find something that fits decently well. Thrift shops ( Salvation Army, Value City, St. Whatever, etc..) are FULL of dark suits and blazers. If you find something that fits in the body but the sleeves are too long, go to Wal-Mart and get some hem tape and you can shorten them up a bit with that and an iron.

If you're in or near a big metro area and don't mind saying where, let people know. I'm guessing someone on this board has the thrift scene for your city pretty well dialed in and can give you a tip on where to start your search.

If you can't get hold of a jacket, then I suggest a cardigan or v-neck sweater.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
