So I am currently looking for fullstrap loafers. I initially wanted to purchase Alden 684 in Cordovan no.8 however as I do not live in the USA it seems that my only other alternatives might be Edward Green Montpellier and Crockett and Jones Yale. Now the EG are probably out of budget budget but the CJ seems to be possible. Does anyone have any experience with any of these shoes?

Seeing as the CJ might the most likely candidate, I am honestly worried that they are not as sleek as the Alden 684 or EG Montpellier as the stitching is wider on the toes.

I plan to wear them as a bridge between casual and formal clothes. Fullstrap loafers are the only loafers that "could work" for suits(on the casual end) which is why I am looking for them.

Honestly this is a question of personal taste.

I have the Yales and they are wonderful. Low vamp and certainly not clunky. But they are fuller and more Ivy. More like a LHS than an Alden full-strap, though I think the fullstrap yale is more interesting than the LHS or the Boston.

Obv EG is in a league of their own and the montpellier is wonderful, but I don't have 2K for loafers and frankly even if I did, they wouldn't fill the gap that the Yale's would leave in my shoe collection.

I have a pair of 684s and I love them. Extremely low vamp, be warned, but they're my pick for the most versatile shoe. From the playground with my toddler to sharply creased slacks, they just need a good brushing.

Yeah it's about personal taste and how the last feels/looks on you. Really no difference in quality since they're all awesome. Like I have EG Chelseas but I have Alden penny loafers because I like the last and Alden does shell cordovan really well.

Try them all on and if you can't decide go with EG because if you can afford it they are a better quality shoe on the margins and retain their value a bit more if you ever decide to sell them.

I bought a pair of full-strap Aldens in calf this summer. I've been planning to post in Alden topic, and will. I really like them, but would caution about the sizing/last, esp if you can't try them on or return them.

I've worn them maybe a dozen days so far, and today was the first day I felt like I'm okay with the fit. They've taken that many wears to get sorta comfortable. I could see them getting moved near the top of my rotation now, though.

Hello,

Do you have any other reference with such a low vamp?
I am in Europe, I can find the 684 in my size, 10.5, but only in D.
I need E and it looks like it is only available in the US and they are not shipping.

So looking for other very low vamp loafer :D

I'm not really aware of others with such a low vamp. Alden tends to do a relatively low vamp on all of their loafers, including the LHS and the tassel, but neither are as low as the 684.

Have you tried on the D width? Due to the low vamp, I've found that the jump from D to E is huge. My 684s are E width and my 563 tassels are D width, and the difference is enormous. I had my cobbler build up the heel cup and I use a tongue pad. I'm going to send them to Alden this winter to get crafted and relasted as a D width.

The EG is in a totally different price bracket, but overall I for sure like the Yale the most. That shoe is fantastic looking and barely more than the Alden and has a nice rounder, Ivy look to it that I myself prefer.
