I have a wedding coming up and I'm wondering if my tuxedo will be ok. I'm not in the wedding but I am family of the bride.

I look like Bond in this tux and most everyone will probably have more of a conservative look. I'm wondering if I can salvage the tux by just getting some alterations on it and maybe a bowtie, new shirt and other accessories if needed?

Or if the style of my tux is too strange / outdated? and I need to get a new one. I just don't know anything about tuxedo fashion to understand if what I have is too modern or old or ..something else?

I believe what I have is called a peak lapel? I'm going to get this altered to be more fitted.

Attached are pictures. What kind of shirt should I get with this, cumberbund, tie?

Probably best to post this question in the official wedding thread. But to my eye, it looks too trendy for my tastes, and looking like Bond has nothing to do with it; it’s just not a proper tux. There are quite a few options if you’re looking for a more classic/proper look. Just depends on what you’re looking to do.

I think the whole purpose of a Black Tie dress codes to adhere to a timeless set of rules, so that everyone looks relatively similar and ultimately to not stand out but have a relatively uniform look. These rules can be relaxed a bit if it is an art gallery or hollywood-style gathering, but probably not for an event described as 'conservative'

A ton of info and suggestions can be found on the Black Tie Guide, its the most comprehensive guide i've found so far on the subject (did a lot of research prior to my wedding).

That being said a) unless your from a particularly high social status, I don't think the majority of people truly understand the Black Tie so they might not see anything out of the ordinary with that odd lapel, and b) a Black Tie event should be an evening event and will most likely have low light, so the lapel would be less noticeable than in the photos above

FWIW, I'd at least ditch the long tie and opt for a bow tie, its a small cost compared to replacing the whole thing and will bring it back closer to the traditional outfit

No, you really don't, not in that jacket.

Or if the style of my tux is too strange / outdated? and I need to get a new one. I just don't know anything about tuxedo fashion to understand if what I have is too modern or old or ..something else?
It falls squarely into the "something else" category.

If you want to wear black tie, as has been suggested check out the dedicated threads on wedding attire and on black wear. There is plenty of help and advice available there. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing inherently wrong with your jacket, it is just not a traditional dinner jacket in any sense and those lapels just look...something else. Depending on your budget, Suit Supply can outfit you in a decent tuxedo and accessories for about as decent a price as you will find.[/QUOTE]
