Fit of C&J Radstock Verses C&J Ashdown

One would think that since the C&J Radstock and Ashdown are both made on the 341 last, and both have Dainite soles, they would fit the same.

I own the Radstock, and am happy with the fit. Today the Ashdown arrived. When I tried these shoes on, I found I had the same problem that I had with the C&J Grasmere, Alden Barrie last, and Peals (Alfred Sargent) pebble grain Dainite soled casual shoes. The shank area just feels like it is too arched and digs into the soles of my feet. It feels like standing barefoot on a roll of quarters.

In examining the Dainite soles of my UK size 11 E Radstock and Ashdown shoes, I see that the Radstock has a heel labeled 3 1/4", while the Ashdown heel is labeled 3 5/8" (this is the measurement from the back to the front of the heel). The Ashdown heel is also wider than the Radstock heel, and the shoe has a 360 degree welt, while the Radstock does not. I was thinking that the longer heel may be responsible for the arch area discomfort. However, I have some rubber soled Alden shoes with even longer heels that don't cause this discomfort.

My options for lace-up high quality Goodyear welted rubber/Dainite soled shoes that might have a chance of fitting, is getting rather thin.

The only other options I can think of is the Barker Harris, and Nairn, and the Cheaney, Deal. I am hoping that they won't have this same arch issue.

Has anyone else faced this same problem?

Jess
