i'm not a fan of black suits either (i usually wear blue to work), however a black bag in my opinion goes with most colours and is always a fairy 'safe' choice. i'm going to order it in the next day or two, so hopefully it isn't too severe. ;)

I'm sure it will be great. I carried a black back for a few years exclusively, before I realized the amazing possibilities of brown!

On edit: If the black Filson is anything like the tan/brown, your black straps won't stay black for long. The finish will crack and show the much lighter natural leather. I think it looks good on brown straps, but I have no idea what it will look like in black.

hmm, is this common? as long as the leather is black all the way throughout (if that makes any sense) then it shouldn't be a huge issue.

It's not black all the way through. It's a nice light tan underneath. The cracking has occurred on every Filson bag I've ever owned (a good number) or seen.

Keep your straps well conditioned-with Lexol, or better yet Obenaufs LP-and they will look new much longer. That said, I love that brownish fade on the tan Filson bags.

Lexol removed a ton of color from my field satchel, I'd use something less abrasive.

PS you're the second DWC guy I've seen on here...

The Lexol Leather Conditioner (and not cleaner) removed colour from your field satchel ?

Yeah, that sounds very odd. Lexol is very safe to use with a wide range of leathers. That said, I do prefer HDLP for my Filson straps.

I'm fairly sure. I'll pull out the bottle and double check. For some reason it only pulled color from the folded sections.

dammit, now you have me second guessing black because of the straps. none of the other colours with the exception of navy are gonna fly at my work and i really don't like the tan or otter green. surely that bulang & sons example didn't start out with black straps?

They were dark brown, but the black shouldnt be too different.

Will the 257 count as a personal item and the medium duffle as a carry on? I'm about to go on my first flight, so any comment is appreciated.

Medium duffle--when full--is definitely over the carryon size. That said, I use mine as a carryon all the time and I just generally leave it a bit less than full and walk onto the plane confidently, and I have yet to run in to any issue.
