Thanks, everybody. No Trader Joe's near me, so I'll give the others a spin and see if Central Market or Whole Foods have anything else to offer.

Useful thread as such things go. I've been eating Whole Foods but it's just a better grade of sawdust. Have to check out Trader Joe's.

The tuna that comes vacuum packed in those packets instead of in cans is much better IMO. I learned this trick from Alton Brown and it has definitely improved the taste of anything tuna related that I make.

I saw that too and thought I needed to try the bags. I'll try one next time I stock up -- off my tuna kick right now.

I usually buy Starkist packed in water. Get em in 10 packs at Sam's.

Sometime last year they changed from 6oz in a can to 5oz and prices went up like 50% really quickly. And they haven't really gone back down.

If you go for the oil-packed, make sure it's olive oil and not something like soybean.

I just get solid white albacore packed in water from Trader Joes. I mix it with brown rice and sriratcha sauce and it is SO good. In fact, I might have some for lunch today.

Tuna has never tasted as good as it used to, before it went dolphin free.

I agree. The best tuna is Italian tuna packed in olive oil (although i dont know if Ortiz is Italian) . And yes, in my experience the more $$$ tuna does have a difference. Over on chowhound, people say that Progresso brand is the best tuna available in the "typical" grocery store. However, i cannot confirm that as i have never had that tuna. Also.. albacore is not the best tuna.

I like Genoa much better than Progresso for 'typical' grocery store choice

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
