Hi All,

I've just found out I'm going to have to get eyeglasses, but I have no idea how to shop for them.

I'm really fond of this style, but I'm worried it may look too comical or old-fashioned:

What do you guys think? I'm short, white, and have a pretty exaggerated receding hair line. I do, however, have rather sharp facial features that I think could handle a style like this (i.e. not pudgy or soft.)

Any tips? Suggestions? I'd rather not go the contacts route, and it might be nice to have another accesory in the arsenal.

Thanks in advance,

Chad

I'm in love with Derome Brenner (http://www.deromebrenner.com/), but they are very aggressively styled. Oliver Goldsmith will, for a small upcharge, do up glasses in any of their shapes in any of something like 50 different colors (ranging from very conservative to totally insane) and for a larger upcharge resize the glasses nose, overall width, and I believe height to your face. http://olivergoldsmith.com/ Gotti + Neiderer do very nice horn glasses in large sizes. While primarily optical, some look great as sunglasses. http://www.gotti.ch/seite1.html http://www.meyer-eyewear.com/ have some really nice steel and reindeer horn glasses. http://www.mykita.net/collection.php make sturdy, flexible steel glasses that look a bit fun. None of these, unless I've gone crazy, splash themselves with logos, or (except for my Brenner's) go too crazy with the shapes. Finally, if you want something truly unique, get some M.A.D.E. (http://www.ma-de.com/) glasses. Beautiful, hand-carved wooden glasses like nothing else. My friend just got a pair. http://bp1.blogger.com/_qVowgPZ05Hk/...E+style111.JPG My current frames, on someone else

Both of those are just some places to look and thoughts. I don't know how settled you are on your shape, but I thought I'd point out some frames. There were a bunch of pictures in my original posts, they died in copying over here. http://askandyaboutclothes.com/forum...hlight=orgreen for the pictures.

Thanks for the links...a lot of good info there, though most of those are too hip for my tastes!

Do you have any recommendations of frame size & shape in relation to face size and shape?

Thanks!

I'm sorry, I don't. I've relied on the good eyes of friends and, to be honest, strangers I've apprehended in the stores to keep me from getting ill fitting glasses.

I have a fit suggestion. When you try on any pair, make sure your eyes are centered left to right between the frame. The glasses will appear more balanced on your face. Some models come in different sizes for this purpose.

As for styling, I can dig those tortoise shells. The way you describe your features, you could maybe pull off the "Ed Harris as Jackson Pollock" look. I'm more of a square frame horn-rimmed kinda guy.

I don't wear glasses but I do like the pair you originally posted. If you do want to go with something like this... http://bp1.blogger.com/_qVowgPZ05Hk/...h/FAUN_149.JPG My suggestion would be that since you mentioned a receding hairline, you might just want to shave the rest off and let the glasses be your only feature. I've seen a number of guys do that and it seems to really work.

Angloamerican....Stylish in the eyes of some it may be, but so is Chevy Camaro. They fit like pitchforks too.

Dita's Select Optical Collection offers a style similar to the one pictured. New Yorker is the name. Look it up.

ps.etruscan, thank you.

The advice does not work perfectly for everyone - there's a reason why image consultants need to see their clients - but here is such a guide.

You really just need to try things on. Probably more than any other fashion item/accessory, how glasses look on a person is a very idiosyncratic thing. A good optician will help, but many are very bad. In general, though, you should follow some basic guidelines like making sure your eyes will be centered within the individual lens frames (both vertically and horizontally--many people don't notice this ever), the width of the frames correspond to the width of your head at the temples, and the frame can accommodate your specific prescription: a stronger prescription will often necessitate a thicker frame. And the color should be something that goes well with your eyes and skin.
Also, the frame shape should be proportional to your face and complement your features--if you have more angular features, you can often get away with a sharper-angled and more severe, square-like look, while if you have a rounder face, you likely want to stay away from such frames.

Again, a good optician will help you with these things. A bad one will attempt to gouge you for a nice commission and steer you towards the flashiest name/highest profit item.
