Yup, just went through the experience. I will tell you that their price is not low, it is embarrassingly low. It borders on unethically low (more on that in a minute).

They had a pair of Alden shells that I really wanted and as you know, I am close to retirement and simply have to quit buying shoes. So, I got the bright idea to trade a few pairs. I did not try to negotiate and given that no one put a gun to my head, I was fine accepting their offer with the full knowledge that it was not market (or close to it) value. No harm no foul.

Then I saw my EG's listed on their pre-owned site and what they were charging for them and was not happy. I understand all about markup, margins, and the like. But the difference between what they offered me and what they sold them for was really bad. I thought, unethical. I politely sent them an email congratulating them on taking advantage of a stooge like me and additionally, please remove me from your email list as I won't be back.

I am not a complainer (and I think you know that) but this one left me with a really bad taste in my mouth. If you decide to do it, the process itself is pretty easy. Just understand that you are going to get far less than you otherwise would. The price you pay for convenience is really really steep. I can guarantee you they made more money off my trades than they do from selling a new pair. Just didn't feel right.
I know Leffot is a business, but it's very disappointing to read about your experience. Especially considering the owner is highly respected in the industry and served as inspiration to many including Skoak (IIRC).

I did see a listing for burgundy crup Galway for $1800+. It was initially listed as "new" on Instagram and sold the same day they listed on the website. I remember you'd listed it here for $1200, which I felt was a great price. Leffot definitely made a killing on this pair. Did you sell both shell Galways to Leffot?

Yup, those were mine and I am not at all surprised even the owner mistook them for new. They were worn once to a wedding. Sipped concrete for about 45 seconds and total wear time we less than 3 hours. I did get a quote on my other Shell Galways but decided to hold on to them. I will say that I did not deal with the owner nor did I ask for him (my dealing with him have always been good). In hindsight, I was simply uninformed. While I knew the value of my pair, I really wanted the pair I grabbed from them and remain happy with my new edition. Again, they took advantage of a stooge because they could. Bravo to them. They must be so proud. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

try talking to Luxeswap on ebay they'll do consignment, and have a ton of exposure on the bay. Otherwise, just have to play the waiting game on ebay or here on SF
I've considered Luxeswap, but believe net is comparable to Leffot. I sold 15 pairs last year, couple on SF and rest on the bay. Most shoes sell relatively quickly as long as they're priced slightly below market, but I'm always wary of dealing with unethical or irrational buyers.

Edit: in my experience most folks on eBay are great, but I've also dealt with a few complete jerks. One guy was very pushy and tried to get me to allow returns on a pair of brand new shell cordovan shoes so he could try on and assess fit. The idiot even threatened to leave a bad review because I didn't respond the same day, so I ended up blocking him. Recently I also had poor experience with a seller after I asked him very politely if he could share picture of size imprinted on lining. This was for a pair of Alden on a last that doesn't run TTS, and it was difficult to read the text on the box due to angle and poor lighting. Sharing here for laughs. There are all kinds people on the bay, it's the nutters that make me nervous

Jesus Christ, some of these sellers are insane. Dealing with the masses on eBay is a pita… unrelated to anyone I suppose but if you got 9.5/10E and you’re looking to offload stuff hmu

Oh my, this is equally hilarious and infuriating. Love your response. My experience tends to mirror yours and as much as it pains me to say it, in many cases, I actually prefer eBay to SF. Yeah I hate their fees but their offering has gotten so much better that at least I feel as though I‘m getting value. And as I have gotten older, I’ve gotten less patient with someone asking for a $25 discount on a pair of $700 shoes (SF experience with an increasing number of members). If that extra $25 is soul-crushing, perhaps a pair of $700 shoes in not a wise decision at this point in time.

Ok, rant done!

I'm trying to feel for you but it's hard given you consented to their low offer. Not like it's hard to search eBay or this forum for completed transactions to know where the market is for your shoe model

Sorry, not to pile on here, but it sounds like at the time you decided to sell you knowingly agreed to below market pricing because, at least in part, selling to the store offered an expediency of transaction so that you could offset some of the cost of the new pair you wanted. While I can understand getting irked after seeing Leffot turn around and list/sell the shoes at a much higher price, ultimately you got out of the transaction what you wanted -- a new pair of Aldens. I'd be happy with that and don't let the few list $$ bother you!

Guys,

If I was fishing for sympathy I would have posted my thoughts as things happened. I didn’t. I provided feedback of my experience as requested from a member that I have had many positive interactions with. That’s it. Your sympathy and Monday -morning QB’ing is better used elsewhere. I’m a big boy.

Mushroom suede Dovers on 606. I like them but find them challenging to style, so they don’t get a lot of use. I wear them with denim or olive trousers and that’s about it.

Do you think EG mushroom suede is too light? I'd think various shades of khaki and light to medium blue trousers would look good. I have been thinking about adding an EG loafer in sand color suede which appears a bit lighter than mushroom.

They can work with different color trousers, but I generally try to adhere to the shoes being darker than trousers rule. Plus, they almost match some of my khaki-ish trousers, which I try to avoid. I'm unfamiliar with EG's sand suede but I had some EG loafers in oyster suede and found that they were too light and ended up selling them.

for those who are familiar with EG 72 last, do you take the same UK size as the Alden Barrie?

I am 7E in Barrie, should I go for 7E/7.5E in the 72 last or 6.5E/7E?

Yes, UK9.5E in EG 72 and stamped size 9.5D in Alden barrie. 72 has a bit more accommodation on volume so E and E would probably be fine for you

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
