I took the train up a few months ago when visiting from Australia. In the most common sizes there was mainly black oxfords and what most would perceive to be less desirable makeups (brighter green/yellow/orange suedes etc). I probably wouldn't go again.
Anything interesting to do around the area? Is the train ride itself pleasant?

Thinking about doing the same next time I'm in London and making a daytrip out of it.

The ultimate loafer?

For quite a while I've been considering which loafer would be the most versatile, stylish, and comfortable. After some (okay, admitted, a lot of) research I've settled on the Barksdale, an old model made for RLPL. It features a very nice full strap (more masculine than the Montpellier), an heel seam, and a quite unique semi-split toe.

However, I think it would look better on the 184 with a rounded seem, and EG has confirmed they can do it, as well as making it unlined. The leather would be dark brown cordovan (Cognac Crup).

The price quote from EG nearly made me faint, though. So my questions are two: would anyone be interested in joining this make up as a GMTO through The Hand? And your thought on the make up, worth the money?

Cheers,
SKM

While I think benefits of unlined have become overblown lately, I do still have a slight preference for them, especially in a casual loafer. I could have missed it but I don’t see a price reference (other than you indicating that it’s pretty high). Obviously for me price is a factor but not likely the main one. I would absolutely be interested in a rounder toe. The squared model displayed would not interest me.

You're absolutely right, thought I would wait for a quorum until I asked for a GMTO price quote. But my initial quote was around 2900 EUR 😬

Apparently cordovan is going up a lot these days; at Stefano Bemer it's an extra 1000 EUR compared to regular leather. It's not as bad here, I guess, but then the pattern adjustment comes on top 🙈

Is that ex-VAT price? I'm quite interested too

thank you for your feedback, as I continue to be genuinely puzzled by this trend, notably because unlined shoes are less durable. As for a data point for whoever may be interested, I live in Singapore, have several calf/suede versions of Belgravia/Piccadilly, all lined and I have no issues at all, even during long walks outside.

I live in a warm climate and find unlined shoes ever slightly cooler, but for me the main advantage is comfort and fit.

Pairs made in soft uppers like unlined suede or CXL are specially comfortable, although unlined cordovan also feels fantastic. I always wear socks but apparently unlined shoes are also more comfortable when worn sockless (vs lined shoes).

More importantly though, unlined uppers adapt better to my feet, which makes a differente in RTW shoes when the last may not fit you perfectly.

For instance, I tried a pair of shell lined loafers in the Leydon last that hurt my pinky toe. But I can wear Chukka boots in the same last (unlined suede) with no issues. Sure, shell is harder than suede, but being unlined certainly makes a difference.

A friend of mine buy Rancourts in unlined CXL half size down from his usual size. They are tight at first, but break-in nicely while molding to your feet. The moc construction certainly helps, but personally I wouldn't do the same with lined shoes. So you have that flexibility in terms of fit I guess.

This ^. They are more comfortable/flexible on foot. I have not noticed them to be much less durable than their lined counterparts
