I have found the 888 (which i think 890 is derived from) much roomier than the 82 esp instep.

Interesting, thanks. Good to know for the future. The only EG oxford I have is on the 888. My EG shoes on the 82 are a single monk and Galways. Maybe I need to try a half size up on the 82 for an oxford.

The 82 overall maybe the tightest fitting last they have (i know about the new and old last thing).

I trialed some shoes out a couple of weeks back.
Inverness on 888
Chelsea on 82
Malvern on 202 which i have on now and worn for some time

888 and 82 are longer than 202
888 has the most instep room then 202 then 82
Forefoot width i could not tell a diff be 202 and 888. The 82 is slightly tighter
82 and 888 both have less toe room side to side than 202.

Of course it may depend from model to model
But i found the 888 roomier overall other than the toes side to side than the 202 which i have many shoes in

This "nightshade"-- is it a variant of oxblood?

I would say yes. These shoes are a very dark reddish-brown, at least under the florescent lights in my office.

Interesting to see that people think the 888 have more room in the toe box than the 82. I tried on a pair on the 82 and found it to be more roomy than my 888. I guess it goes back to never trust what you read because everyone's foot is different and everyone prefers to wear their shoes differently.

I did not think it had more room in the toe box. It had less for me side to side (elongate but narrow toe box). But it was def wider in the forefoot and roomier on the instep than the 82 i tried (not sure if the 82 was on the old or new lasts).
I actually tried 1/2 size down on the 888 compared to my usual 202 size bc it was so roomy.
Every foot is diff so you got to try them on.
For me at least the 888 had more instep room than all my non MTO 202 last shoes (about 8 or so)

It's funny because our feet are completely opposite. 888 is slim on me and the 202 is perfect for me.

I agree with you on the 202, my favorite last and best fit for ny foot. If it does not come in the 202, I MTO the shoe on the 202. I do get some extra instep on the mtos bc i want the laces to close all the way. Purely aesthetic change as the 202 fits my foot the best.

I found the 888 not a good fit probably for diff reason than you. It was too long for my usual 8.5 size and not as snug as i like it overall. Going down a size made it better over the instep (tigther) but squished my toes too much.

It is interest8ng though that we both find the 202 the best fit, but i dont like the 888 bc it was too long and roomy on the instep, but it was too tight on you.

Thats why you gots to try the shoes on before

So 888 is more narrow and longer than other lasts? Would it be wise to size down a half size and/or go up in width?

For reference I think E82 in 8UK fits well, and like others 202 last has been my favorite fit (same size 8UK E)

Every one has diff experiences. But overall it has roomier instep and forefoot than the 82 but same length. Toe box is probably narrower also. It is certainly longer than the 202 but has a narrower toe box. I personally thought that the instep was roomier also than the 202. The 82 on my foot is the tightest last and the 202 is the best.

Overall these changes are not enough to change size but will affect how good a fit the last is for your foot. If the 82 fits you well then i would get the same size in the 888

Agree on the 82/888 alignment. The 202 in 8 UK E fitting is quite good for me, but because of my longer toes, I do also like the 82 and 888 for the additional toe box length. The 202 seems to accommodate my longer toes with the width of the toe box. I would agree the 82/888 are slightly narrower in the toe box than the 202. The 808 is similar to the 888 while being more narrow in the waist as well.

For the 888 vs 82 not sure how my feet are different but I find 888 really constricting but 82 is fine.

Could I get confirmation that a G&G 8 1/2 UK will get a slightly roomier fit in a EG last 888 of same size, but stick with the same 8 1/2 UK?

Personally, my experience tells me wear the same size.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
