Does anyone get mocked for over-dressing at work?

Perhaps the title of this thread should be changed to: Does anyone get mocked for over-dressing at work?.

To OP,

I commend you for wearing a suit. Given today's social/business environment, it's becoming somewhat of a lost "art". Hopefully, that trend will reverse someday. I won't belabor the point because it's been discussed ad nauseam. I will simply suggest that you channel that desire/energy into building a business wardrobe that is less formal. You'll still look nice, but you'll also be more congruent with your current business setting.

Fair argument. Better?

Sorry, but you do realize this one makes you sound like a massive tool, right?

Actually, maybe not that much - he's limiting the comment to ironing rather than dissing that guy in general. Generalizing from clothes to the value of the person as a whole would be douchey.

Yeah, that was the point. He didn't dress particularly badly, in fact (especially compared to one of the other guys on the systems team). But... never ironed.

But you know, the guy was from systems. He doesn't have to talk to anyone outside of systems, and the server doesn't care how he's dressed.

I'll dress head-to-toe formal one day to work, and jeans-and-tshirt the next.

I think if you at least represent both ends of the spectrum once in awhile, it helps avoid coming off as a megalomaniac.

Ultimately, though, your personality is what matters IMO; whether you're a good dude or a prick, you're going to be held to that whether you wear sweat pants and crocs or a suit.

I actually had a boss tell the staff to come in "formal dress" once.

We were this close to turning up in morning dress for the day when we found out that the new owner would be taking a tour and thought better of it.

Actually, that would've been pretty cool. Then, when the owner asks for your name(s), everybody would reply, "Bond, James Bond."

Not to mention, no one says things like "people naturally gravitate to whoever matches their preconception of the person they feel they should be dealing...blah, blah, blah." I don't know if it makes him seem like a tool, but it definitely makes him seem like a dude who tries too hard in his posts.

Bond is a cad. He wears dinner jackets during the day.

Or alternatively, someone who has a command of the English language and isn't afraid to use it. (I'm British, and I really do talk like that)

Better to not try at all because you fear exposing your own ineptitude than to try too hard, right mate?

OP, you're a smart guy, wear the suit in a more formal environment or after a couple of promotions. I'm down for looking good in any setting, but i try not to stand out for the wrong reason. The fact is coworkers and management can be insecure and clients are typically fickle. I Don't like giving anyone any ammo, especially when you can satisfy both yourself and those around you. As others have eluded to, up your dress subtly with well groomed, high quality shirts and pants, both fitted to your physique. Also invest in an impressive dress shoe wardrobe and youll get attention for all the right reasons. Most people at work dress like schmucks so its easy to make a positive impression all while satisfying your sartorial whims and desires. If you really want to wear a jacket, or a suit, wear it on a cooler day so it appears to have more function. Ime, whenever coworkers see suit they think interview, and whenever that's the case you'll get plenty of prodding question.

I've worked in Gov and Private sectors, including consulting gigs for handfuls of Fortune 500 companies. The reality is that the workplace has become more casual but with increased emphasis on performance. If you really want to wear the suit and not take any flack for it, produce exceptional results.
