Unrelated, is it just a southern thing that sometimes people will confuse "John Henry" for "John Hancock?"

I've never had it happen up 'north,' but I'll bet 4-5 times in various contexts in the south I've had somebody ask for my "John Henry" on something needing a signature. I don't correct, but just giggle, wanting to ask, "And just where on this form will that big Steel Drivin' Man fit?"

None of us are perfect, and sometimes you just grab the wrong word, so I tend to cut people slack. The only one I will comment on, is my pet peeve.

The point is not mute, it is moot.

If I'm going to correct this one, I'll do it privately and apologetically, so as to try not to offend. However, it's simply too egregious to let that one go, as I hear it quite often.

Marcus Aurelius mentions this in his Meditations. He writes that the best way of making the other person aware of their mistake subtly is using the word correctly yourself.
