Greetings,

I have noticed, that many suits have sewn-on (i.e. fake) breast-pockets, and even those with real pockets are often "closed".

So what do you do, if you want to use a handkerchief? I don't want to cut up my suit if I don't have to :p

all you do is remove the basting thread, cut it with scissors or a knife, or undo it by hand.

Most suits have real pockets, they are just sewn shut. I haven't seen a single suit with a "fake" pocket, just some that are more tightly sewn than others.

By 'sewn-on' he might be talking about a patch pocket.

Might have worded that unclearly...

What I meant was simply that the pocket appears to stop about 1 inch down.

But it may just be that it has been sewn shut very carefully

What's welting look like? Let alone fake welting? All I know is the regular "slot" pocket and patch pocket.

I've seen faux breast pockets on suits from Zara and its affiliate Massimo Dutti.

I read somewhere that suits sometimes are made without pockets, but only the appearance of pockets. Since you're not supposed to put anything (at least not your hands) in a suit jacket pocket anyway, I guess it makes some sort of sense.

Are you sure? I got a Zara jacket for £25 in the sales that I thought had a fake pocket but, no, it was just very tightly sewn shut. I soon had it open.

Seems cheapie stuff has tightly closed pockets.
