Sorry, that's just my bad memory. Anyway, all blind eyelets is a showstopper for me (will take ages to get them on!) and I also think rubber sole and regular welt (as opposed to storm welt) is a bit contradictory. But maybe we could make the second run with leather soles and speed hooks?

Here's what was proposed by Papa Doble. I could definitely go for double leather sole instead of Dainite but not a deal breaker. Flat or storm/split reverse welt, I'm fine with either of them.

As for the design, here is what I suggest we move forward with. Essentially the exact boot @mdubs posted above, with modifications indicated by ***:

Crockett & Jones Harlech Cap Toe Boot
Last: 341
Upper: Whiskey Shell Cordovan
Sole***: Brown Dainite with a leather mid sole. If brown is not available, then black Dainite with a leather mid sole (just like @mdubs’s boot).
Welt***: Flat 360 degree rather than storm/split reverse 360 degree
Edging: antique/light brown
Eyelets: all blind
Pull tab***: none

Edit: Oh well, guess I took too long finding this post, chocol8max beat me to it.

If you want wet weather grip, why not get a topy?

Dainite is just the worst option IMO; when it wears out, you have to get it resoled. You cannot get topy to affix to the rubber like you can to leather sole.

But if enough people wanted each of the two choices, split runs would be a good idea
The reason I was hoping for dainite (but correct me if I'm wrong) is that from what I've read, affixing a topy wouldn't allow the leather to breathe and can possibly trap moisture between the layers leading to premature degradation or even rotting (god forbid) of the leather. Feel free to correct me as I'm still learning.

Sounds a lot like the original Harlech.

Maybe we could come up with a completely new makeup for the second run that hopefully we can all agree on by the time round 2 gets finalised?

Regardless of whether that is true or not, dainite also will not allow the leather insole to breathe. So there is no difference in that regard.

I definitely need to reassess but it will be good to hear from the round 2 organisers about make up options.

Exactly, but if it aint bust don't fix it :)

Anyway, I'll be happy to join the second run (you might even be able to persuade me to organise it), but it will have to be with speed hooks then. But I'm open to negotiate the sole (though as you know I would prefer double leather) and I also think there should be consistency between welt and sole (i.e. Dainite and flat welt doesn't make a lot of sense to me).

Haha very true.

I am far more inclined toward a Harlech with speed hooks so I'm definitely in, whatever the sole/welt choice.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
