Color combinations for interior

I'm planning furniture purchases for my new apartment. It has a kitchen with maple cabinets and black granite countertops that opens onto the living area. Hardwood floors throughout.

I wanted to get a red leather sofa, and have found some very nice red leather samples. I thought I could keep the walls white or paint them a cream/yellowish color.

I'm also going to be getting a leather reading chair and ottoman set and was wondering what colors would work for it, given the rest of the color scheme. Would a light brown/tan be appropriate, or should I do the chair and ottoman in the same red leather as the sofa?

Any ideas in terms of color combinations that would work?

Forgot to mention that the apartment is a 640sq ft 1 bedroom with high ceilings and good light. The living room is about 17ft by 14 ft.
